Chapter 3 - The Exiled Brother

Amara stared at the man holding the smoking gun.
Matteo Moretti had not been seen in Chicago for five years.
Dante had exiled his younger brother after a brutal power struggle that nearly destroyed their family.
"Matteo," Amara breathed, taking a cautious step back.
"Hello, Amara," Matteo replied, kicking Elias's gun away.
"You look beautiful, even when you're running for your life."
Matteo holstered his weapon and gestured toward his armored SUV.
"Get in before Dante's men hear that gunshot."
Amara hesitated, clutching her bag tighter.
"Why should I trust you?" she demanded.
"Because I hate Dante just as much as you do right now," Matteo answered honestly.
"And because you have the ledger I need to finally destroy him."
Amara realized she was trapped between a dangerous husband and a lethal brother-in-law.
She climbed into the passenger seat of Matteo's vehicle.
He drove them deep into the city's labyrinth of underground parking garages to lose any tails.
"He told me to accept his mistress or leave," Amara said quietly, staring out the window.
Matteo laughed darkly.
"Dante is a fool who doesn't know the value of loyalty."
He pulled into a heavily guarded underground bunker.
"You are safe here, Amara."
She relaxed slightly, letting out a breath she hadn't realized she was holding.
Then, the heavy metal doors of the bunker rolled shut, locking from the outside.

Matteo turned to her with a chilling smile.
"Now, hand over the ledger, or you will never see the sun again."
