Chapter 8 - The Secret Ally

I sprinted down the dark, rainy street, my breath coming in ragged and painful gasps.
Marcus saw me coming in his rearview mirror and immediately threw the passenger door open.
I dove into the car just as the front porch lights of the massive mansion flicked on behind me.
Marcus hit the gas, tearing away from the curb and disappearing safely into the night.
"Did you get the bearer bonds?" Marcus asked, glancing worriedly at my bleeding, scratched face.
I held up the small metal hard drive, a dark and victorious smile spreading across my lips.
"I got something much more powerful than money," I whispered, catching my breath.
We drove in absolute silence for an hour until we reached a secluded cabin deep in the woods.
Marcus carried me inside, laying me gently on the sofa to inspect my torn surgical stitches.
"You took an incredible risk tonight, Mabel," he scolded gently as he applied fresh bandages to my side.
"Why are you risking your own career and life to help me, Marcus?" I asked, looking deeply into his eyes.
He paused, his medical hands trembling slightly as he looked away from me.
"Ten years ago, my younger sister worked as a financial analyst for Vance Global," Marcus began, his voice thick with emotion.
"She discovered Richard and Flynn were embezzling millions from the employee pension funds."
He looked back at me, his eyes burning with a deep, unresolved hatred.
"They framed her for the theft, completely ruined her reputation, and drove her to take her own life," he confessed.
Tears welled in my eyes as I realized the true depth of the Vance family's pure evil.
"I have spent the last decade working my way up at that hospital, waiting for a chance to destroy them," Marcus admitted.
"And now, you have handed me the weapon to finally do it."
I reached out and gently squeezed his hand, feeling a powerful bond forge between us in the darkness.
"They are hosting the annual Vance Global Shareholder Gala in two weeks," I told him, a plan forming in my mind.
"It is the exact night Flynn plans to announce his hostile takeover of my family's remaining shares."

Marcus smiled, a cold and calculating expression that matched my own thirst for vengeance.
"Then we have two weeks to prepare the greatest performance of your life," Marcus replied.
