Chapter 5 - The Confrontation in the Dark

Selina’s malicious laughter echoed loudly over the sound of the heavy rain hitting the concrete.

"Did you really think Richard wouldn't put a tracker on your phone, Mabel?" Selina called out from her SUV.

I froze in the passenger seat, realizing my blood-stained cell phone was still sitting in my pocket, broadcasting my exact location.

Marcus did not hesitate to react.

He slammed the sedan into reverse, tires screeching violently against the smooth concrete floor of the garage.

He spun the steering wheel with incredible precision, speeding toward the rear exit ramp.

Selina gunned the massive engine of her SUV, chasing us aggressively through the concrete pillars.

"Hold on tightly!" Marcus shouted, gripping the steering wheel until his knuckles turned entirely white.

He whipped the sedan up a steep ramp and burst out into the chaotic, rainy Chicago night.

Selina's heavier vehicle struggled to make the sharp, sudden turn, smashing heavily into a yellow toll barrier.

Marcus quickly merged into the heavy city traffic, losing her in a blinding sea of brake lights and rain.

I rolled down my passenger window, pulling the tracked cell phone from my scrub pocket.

I threw the expensive device out into the street, watching it shatter into pieces beneath the tires of a passing truck.

"Thank you for saving my life," I whispered, clutching my throbbing abdomen in agony.

"We need to get you to a safehouse I own in the suburbs," Marcus said, keeping his eyes fixed on the road.

"No," I replied, my voice hardening with sudden, undeniable resolve.

"I need you to drive me to my mansion first."

Marcus slammed on the brakes, pulling the car onto a dark shoulder of the road.

"Are you completely suicidal?" he demanded, staring at me in disbelief.

"The only copy of my mother's bearer bonds is hidden inside my personal safe at the house," I explained quickly.

"If I am going to destroy Vance Global, I need my money to hire lawyers, and I need it tonight."

Marcus stared at me for a long moment, weighing the incredible danger of my request.

He finally sighed, shifting the car back into drive.

"If we get caught, they are going to kill us both," he muttered, pulling back onto the highway.
