Chapter 4 - The Midnight Escape

Dr. Reed stared at me as if I had completely lost my mind.

"You have fresh surgical wounds, you won't even make it to the lobby," he argued, his voice hushed.

I flipped the laptop open and hit play on the security footage.

I forced the doctor to watch Flynn and Selina calmly plot my murder in my own living room.

Dr. Reed's face turned completely pale as the brutal reality of the situation set in.

"If I stay in this bed, Richard Vance will make sure I never wake up tomorrow," I pleaded.

Marcus stared at the frozen frame of Flynn holding the knife, and he finally nodded.

"Okay," Marcus whispered, his medical professionalism giving way to human decency.

"I will help you get out."

He left the room quickly and returned ten minutes later carrying a stack of folded blue surgical scrubs.

He also handed me a white medical face mask and a disposable hairnet.

I fought through excruciating waves of pain to strip off my hospital gown and pull the scrubs over my bandaged abdomen.

Marcus helped me sit in a heavy transport wheelchair, throwing a white doctor's coat over my shaking shoulders.

"Keep your head down and do not speak to anyone," he instructed.

He pushed the wheelchair out of the intensive care unit and into the brightly lit hallway.

My heart hammered against my ribs as we passed the nurses' station, but no one gave us a second glance.

However, as we approached the main elevators, I saw two men in dark suits standing near the doors.

They were Richard Vance's private security thugs.

Marcus sharply pivoted the wheelchair, pushing me down a narrow corridor toward the staff service elevator instead.

We rode the rattling metal box down into the damp, concrete basement of the hospital.

Marcus pushed me through a set of double doors and out into the freezing, rain-soaked underground parking garage.

He helped me out of the wheelchair and guided me into the passenger seat of his dark sedan.

I buckled my seatbelt, feeling a massive wave of relief wash over me.

Marcus started the engine, shifting the car into drive.

Suddenly, blinding high-beam headlights illuminated the dark garage.

A massive black SUV aggressively swerved in front of us, completely blocking our only exit path.

The tinted driver's side window slowly rolled down.

Selina was sitting behind the wheel, smiling maliciously at me through the pouring rain.
