Chapter 6 - The Empty Mansion

Marcus parked his sedan two blocks away from the massive, imposing Vance estate.
The rain was pouring down heavily, providing the perfect cover of darkness for my return.
"You have exactly ten minutes before I come in there after you," Marcus warned me sternly.
I nodded in agreement, clutching my bleeding side as I limped quietly toward the back garden gates.
I typed the security override code into the hidden keypad on the kitchen door.
The heavy door clicked open, plunging me into the pitch-black, familiar hallway of my own home.
I crept slowly past the living room, averting my eyes from the dark bloodstain still soaking into the expensive Persian rug.
I reached Flynn's private study and locked the heavy oak door securely behind me.
I moved straight to the tall bookshelf, pulling a specific volume of poetry to reveal the hidden wall safe.
My fingers flew across the brass dial, entering the combination I had memorized years ago.
The heavy steel door swung open, revealing stacks of bearer bonds and a thick manila envelope.
I grabbed the envelope and shoved it deep into the pocket of my white medical coat.
Just as I turned to leave, I heard the heavy front door of the mansion unlock with a loud click.
Heavy footsteps echoed on the hardwood floor, followed immediately by Selina's high-pitched, annoying laughter.
"Pour me a drink, darling, it has been a very stressful night chasing your crazy wife," Selina said loudly.
I froze entirely, trapped inside the study with absolutely nowhere to run.
The footsteps approached the study door at a terrifying pace.
I watched in horror as the brass door handle began to turn slowly.
I dove silently behind Flynn's massive mahogany desk just as the door swung open.
The study lights flicked on, illuminating the room in a harsh, bright, unforgiving glow.

Flynn walked in, holding two crystal glasses filled with incredibly expensive bourbon.
Selina followed close behind him, wrapping her arms seductively around his waist.
