Chapter 7 - The Crossfire

The mysterious figure holding the gun was Brenda, my former mother-in-law.
She looked absolutely nothing like the frail woman I had nursed back to health.
She held the weapon with steady hands and a cruel smirk on her face.
"I told you to stop looking into Crimson Holdings," Brenda sneered.
She explained that Tristan had tried to back out of the money laundering scheme, so she ordered Dustin to eliminate him.
Wyatt stepped in front of me to shield my body from his own mother's gun.
"Put the gun down, Mom," Wyatt pleaded quietly.
Brenda laughed and pulled the hammer back with a sharp click.
"You always were the weakest son, Wyatt," she spat.
Before she could pull the trigger, the warehouse doors violently burst open.
Dustin and his three heavily armed bodyguards stormed into the dark building.
Dustin saw Wyatt standing with me and immediately raised his own weapon.
"Kill them all," Dustin ordered his men without hesitation.
The warehouse erupted into deafening chaos as the bodyguards opened fire.
Wyatt grabbed my arm and dragged me behind a massive steel shipping crate.
Sparks flew as heavy bullets ricocheted off the metal walls all around us.
Wyatt pulled a small USB drive from his pocket and shoved it into my hand.
"This contains the master ledger for all of Dustin's offshore accounts," Wyatt yelled over the gunfire.
He told me to take my mother and run while he provided covering fire.
Wyatt stepped out from behind the crate and fired his own weapon toward Dustin's men.

A sudden scream echoed through the warehouse as a bullet struck Wyatt in the chest.
He collapsed onto the dirty concrete floor in a pool of his own blood.
