Chapter 6 - The Unlikely Ally

I sat in the freezing holding cell for six agonizing hours.
I was terrified that my mother was dying while I was trapped behind iron bars.
The heavy metal door eventually creaked open and a guard called my name.
"Your bail has been posted," the guard grunted.
I walked out into the main lobby expecting to see Paige waiting for me.
Instead, a tall man in a dark jacket stepped out of the shadows.
It was Dustin's younger brother, Wyatt.
I stepped back instinctively, assuming he was part of the plot to destroy me.
Wyatt held up his hands to show he was completely unarmed.
"I am not here to hurt you, Audrey," Wyatt promised softly.
He explained that he had discovered what Dustin and his mother were doing to me.
Wyatt felt incredibly guilty because I had given him thirty-five thousand dollars for his wedding years ago.
He could not stand by and watch his family destroy the woman who had helped him start his life.
"I know where they are holding your mother," Wyatt whispered.
I demanded that he take me to her immediately.
We climbed into Wyatt's truck and drove toward the industrial shipyard on the edge of the city.
Wyatt explained that Dustin had turned the family business into a massive money laundering syndicate.
The money I had given them over the years was actually used to fund their illegal operations.
We parked behind a row of rusted shipping containers near the dark water.
Wyatt handed me a heavy flashlight and told me to stay close to him.
We crept into an abandoned warehouse and heard voices echoing in the dark.
We found my mother tied to a chair, but she was not alone.

Dustin's other brother, Tristan, was also tied to a chair and bleeding from his head.
A mysterious figure stepped out of the shadows holding a loaded gun aimed directly at us.
