Chapter 4 - The Escape

The three large men formed a solid wall between me and the locked iron gates.

I backed up against the heavy wooden door of the mansion.

My heart hammered violently against my ribs as they stepped closer.

Dustin's voice suddenly crackled through the intercom speaker next to the door.

"You should have just taken your mother and stayed away," Dustin mocked.

He explained that he engineered the slap specifically to make me walk out the door.

He needed me to leave voluntarily so he could file a police report claiming I abandoned our marriage.

He planned to use his powerful lawyers to freeze my remaining assets and leave me with nothing.

The three men reached into their jackets and pulled out heavy zip ties.

I realized they were not going to let me leave this property alive.

I looked around the porch desperately searching for any possible weapon.

I grabbed a heavy stone flower pot and hurled it directly at the closest man.

The heavy pot smashed against his shoulder and knocked him to the ground.

I did not wait for the others to react.

I sprinted across the perfectly manicured lawn toward the side of the house.

I found a tall brick wall covered in thick ivy vines.

I ignored the sharp thorns tearing at my hands and climbed over the wall just as the men rounded the corner.

I dropped onto the public sidewalk and ran furiously toward my parked car.

I scrambled into the driver's seat and sped away before they could follow me.

I drove back to the cheap hotel with tears of panic blurring my vision.

I rushed down the hallway to the room where I had left my mother and Paige.

I pushed the hotel room door open and immediately froze in terror.

The room was completely empty and the furniture was overturned.

A long smear of fresh blood stained the cheap wallpaper near the bathroom door.
