Chapter 2 - The Stolen Life

I completely ignored Brenda's terrifying threat.
I left my mother at the hotel with Paige and drove straight to Brenda’s house.
The familiar suburban street looked exactly the same as always.
However, a massive moving truck was parked directly in her driveway.
Workers were carrying expensive new furniture out of the small house.
I marched up to the front door and demanded to see my mother-in-law.
A neighbor was standing on the lawn and looked at me with pity.
"Brenda does not live here anymore," the neighbor explained.
I asked where she had gone in such a sudden hurry.
The neighbor smiled and said Dustin had moved his mother into his beautiful new mansion.
I felt a sickening knot form deep in my stomach.
Dustin had secretly bought a mansion using our stolen life savings.
I begged the neighbor for the address and she wrote it down on a scrap of paper.
I drove to the affluent neighborhood located on the other side of the city.
The mansion was surrounded by high iron gates and expensive landscaping.
I parked my car on the street and walked up to the massive wooden front door.
I pressed the doorbell and waited for Brenda or Dustin to answer.
The door slowly creaked open to reveal a stunningly beautiful woman.
She was heavily pregnant and wearing a silk robe.
Around her neck was a diamond pendant that belonged to my late grandmother.
"Can I help you?" the pregnant woman asked with a polite smile.
I stared at my stolen family heirloom resting against her chest.
"I am looking for my husband, Dustin," I managed to say.
May you like
The woman frowned and her polite smile completely vanished.
"Dustin is my fiancé, and we are getting married next week," she replied.
