Chapter 2 - The Ultimate Collateral

I stared at the forged documents in absolute disbelief.

Spencer had always been greedy, but I never realized he was desperate enough to commit massive federal fraud.

He had completely bankrupted his own company to fund his luxurious lifestyle and his expensive mistress.

When the traditional banks cut him off, he resorted to using my clean credit history to borrow dirty money.

"How did he even get approved for a billion dollars?" I asked, my hands shaking with pure rage.

Richard slammed his fist onto the mahogany desk.

"Because the syndicate ran a background check and discovered your true connection to the Crawford family," my father explained.

The underground criminals knew I was a billionaire heiress, even if my arrogant husband did not.

They approved the loan because they knew my family could effortlessly cover the massive debt.

"What exactly did Spencer list as the final collateral?" I demanded, flipping frantically through the thick contract.

Thomas pointed to a heavily redacted clause at the very bottom of the final page.

My heart completely stopped beating as I read the horrific terms of the agreement.

If Spencer defaulted on the cash payments, he legally surrendered full physical custody of his daughter to the syndicate.

He had essentially sold Hazel to a criminal organization to save his own pathetic life.

A blinding, murderous fury erupted inside my soul.

Slapping my child was a terrible sin, but trading her life for money was an unforgivable crime.

"I am going to that gala tonight, and I am going to tear his entire world apart," I declared fiercely.

My father nodded in agreement and summoned the best stylists in Los Angeles to the estate.

For the next two hours, they transformed me from a tired, invisible housewife into a breathtaking queen.

They styled my hair into elegant waves and applied flawless, striking makeup to my face.

I stepped into a custom-made, ruby-red evening gown that cost more than Spencer's entire car collection.

Around my neck, my father fastened the legendary Crawford Diamond, a priceless heirloom recognized by elite society everywhere.

I looked in the mirror and barely recognized the powerful, radiant woman staring back at me.

The weak, silent Gwen who scrubbed floors in Bel Air was completely dead.

Gwen Crawford, the sole heir to a global empire, had officially returned.

I kissed Hazel softly as she slept peacefully in the medical wing, completely safe from harm.

I stepped into a fresh limousine and headed toward the most exclusive charity event of the year.

The Grand Pinnacle Gala was swarming with reporters, politicians, and the wealthiest elites of California.

I walked confidently onto the red carpet, instantly blinding the crowd with the brilliant sparkle of my diamond necklace.

Cameras flashed wildly as whispers erupted throughout the luxurious entrance hall.

I stepped into the grand ballroom and immediately spotted Spencer, Cassandra, and Patricia near the champagne tower.

They were laughing loudly, completely unaware that their financial doom had just walked through the door.

Spencer turned his head and locked eyes with me across the crowded room.

His jaw dropped open in absolute awe, completely failing to recognize his own wife beneath the glamour.

He handed his drink to Cassandra and began walking directly toward me with a disgusting, hungry smile on his face.
