Chapter 9 - The Trap

Ethan froze completely, his finger nervously resting on the trigger of his silver revolver.

From the thick fog, four heavily armed federal agents emerged, their weapons trained directly on my husband.

Megan stepped out from behind a large concrete pillar, safely holding her phone in the air.

She had been live-streaming the entire confession directly to the police precinct for the last ten minutes.

The lead FBI agent ordered Ethan to drop the weapon and raise his hands immediately.

Ethan looked at me in absolute, horrified disbelief, realizing I had entirely orchestrated his downfall.

He slowly lowered the revolver, placing it carefully on the wet pavement before kicking it away.

He dropped to his knees, burying his face in his hands as the reality of his ruined life finally hit him.

The agents swarmed him, violently throwing him to the ground and clicking heavy steel cuffs around his wrists.

They read him his rights, listing charges of attempted murder, massive corporate fraud, and wire tampering.

As they dragged him toward the waiting armored vehicles, he looked back at me one last time.

He screamed that I was a monster for taking away the father of Chloe’s unborn child.

I simply turned my back on him, handing the physical ledger to the lead investigator.

The police assured me that Henderson had already been arrested at the corporate office earlier that morning.

The nightmare was finally, definitively over.

Megan hugged me tightly, wrapping her warm coat around my shivering shoulders.

We watched the flashing red and blue lights disappear into the gloomy Seattle morning.

I had successfully survived the poison, the betrayal, and the freezing night that was supposed to break me.

I finally felt a profound, beautiful sense of peace washing over my exhausted mind.

But as I walked back to the Subaru, my phone buzzed with an incoming email from the private investigator I had hired to look into Chloe.
