Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Apple

The emergency room waiting area was crowded, but Megan’s aggressive advocacy got me seen within an hour.

I told the attending physician I suspected I had been exposed to heavy metals and demanded a full blood panel.

He looked skeptical but agreed to run the tests to ease my visible anxiety.

I sat on the sterile paper of the examination table, replaying the last six months of my marriage.

Every time I had complained of stomach pains or fatigue, Ethan had been so wonderfully attentive.

He had constantly offered to cook my meals, prepare my coffee, and manage my daily vitamin regimen.

It had felt like profound love, but it was actually a meticulously planned murder.

A few hours later, the doctor walked back into the room holding a thick clipboard.

His previously relaxed expression was entirely gone, replaced by a look of grave concern.

He closed the door firmly and pulled up a stool to sit directly in front of me.

He gently explained that my blood showed dangerously high, concentrated levels of arsenic.

The dosage was not immediately lethal, but it was designed to build up slowly in my system over several months.

If I had not gone to Chicago and stopped drinking Ethan’s daily smoothies, my heart would have inevitably failed by February.

The doctor stated he was legally obligated to contact the local police immediately.

I begged him to give me just twenty-four hours before making the official report.

I explained that my husband was a powerful, wealthy man who would easily flee the country if he knew I was onto him.

The doctor reluctantly agreed to hold the paperwork until the next morning.

Megan drove me back to her apartment in absolute, horrified silence.

I knew I had to act immediately to strip Ethan of his wealth before the authorities got involved.

I sat down at the computer and initiated a series of complex, untraceable offshore wire transfers.

Just as I moved the final dollar out of his secret account, my phone buzzed with an emergency alert.

It was a breaking news notification from the local Seattle television station.
