Chapter 2 - The Glass House

I spent the next three days recovering from my fever on Megan’s comfortable sleeper sofa.
Ethan never called, never texted, and never tried to contact my family to ask where I was.
He was entirely convinced I was just sulking in a hotel somewhere, giving him the space he desperately wanted.
I used that time to map out every single financial transaction connected to the new holding company.
The money had been used to purchase a luxury penthouse apartment in the most expensive district of downtown Seattle.
Megan offered to drive me there so we could see exactly what my husband had bought with our life savings.
We parked her inconspicuous Subaru across the street from the towering glass condominium building.
The security was incredibly tight, but we had a perfect view of the private valet entrance.
We sat in the freezing car for three hours, drinking terrible gas station coffee and watching the doors.
Just before sunset, Ethan’s familiar gray BMW pulled smoothly up to the curb.
I held my breath as he stepped out of the driver’s side, wearing a tailored suit I had bought for his birthday.
He walked around to the passenger side and gently opened the door.
A young woman stepped out, wrapped tightly in the same pale blue cashmere scarf I had seen on New Year’s Eve.
It was Chloe, his naive, overly cheerful assistant.
She smiled brightly at him, and the wind blew her heavy wool coat open for just a second.
I felt the air completely leave my lungs as I stared through the windshield.
Chloe was heavily pregnant, easily showing at least six months along.
Ethan placed his hand lovingly on her swollen belly and kissed her forehead before leading her inside.

My husband was not just having a trivial workplace affair.
He was actively building an entire second family with the money we had saved for our own children.
