Chapter 5 - The Grieving Husband

I clicked the link on the news alert, and a live video broadcast filled my laptop screen.

Ethan was standing in front of our beautiful suburban house, surrounded by bright news cameras and aggressive reporters.

He looked completely devastated, his eyes red and his tie slightly undone for dramatic effect.

It was exactly twelve days since he had left me freezing at the ferry terminal.

He held up a framed photograph of us on our wedding day, his hands visibly shaking for the cameras.

He told the reporters that his beloved wife had never returned from her business trip in Chicago.

He tragically claimed that I had been suffering from severe depression and had recently stopped taking my medication.

He was deliberately painting a public narrative that I had likely wandered off and committed suicide.

This was his backup plan since the slow arsenic poisoning had been interrupted by my extended work trip.

If the police believed I was a suicidal, missing person, they would not investigate my eventual death as a homicide.

He would collect the five million dollar insurance payout without a single question being asked.

Megan watched the screen in absolute disgust, throwing a couch pillow across the room.

"We have to take this to the police right now," she urged, her voice trembling with anger.

I shook my head, my eyes completely locked on Ethan’s flawless, sociopathic performance.

"If we go to the police now, he will just claim Chloe stole the money and I framed him," I explained.

I needed irrefutable, physical proof that he was the one who bought the arsenic and orchestrated the financial fraud.

I knew he kept a handwritten ledger of his most sensitive illegal transactions in a biometric safe at his corporate office.

The office was heavily guarded, but I still had my executive security badge.

I dressed in dark clothes and drove Megan’s car to the deserted financial district at three in the morning.

I bypassed the lobby security guard and took the service elevator to the executive floor.

I slipped into Ethan’s dark office and easily cracked the backup code to the hidden wall safe.

I grabbed the black leather ledger, finally holding the absolute proof of his twisted crimes.

Suddenly, the heavy oak door of the office violently slammed shut, and the lights flipped on.
