Chapter 6 - The Setup

I spun around, clutching the black leather ledger tightly to my chest.
Standing between me and the only exit was Henderson, Ethan’s senior corporate partner.
He held a suppressed pistol casually at his side, looking completely unsurprised to see me.
"I told Ethan his little ferry dock stunt was incredibly sloppy," Henderson sighed, locking the door.
I stared at him, my mind racing to connect this new, terrifying piece of the puzzle.
Henderson was the one who managed the firm's offshore accounts and massive corporate acquisitions.
He explained that the four hundred and thirty thousand dollars was not just for the secret apartment.
It was a small fraction of the firm's money they had been jointly embezzling for the past three years.
Ethan had promised Henderson that my convenient, tragic death would completely bury the missing funds forever.
They were going to pin the massive corporate embezzlement entirely on my corpse.
Henderson raised the suppressed pistol, aiming it directly at the center of my forehead.
He told me I was going to write a suicide note confessing to the financial crimes right now.
I slowly walked toward Ethan’s heavy mahogany desk, desperately looking for any possible weapon.
I noticed the heavy, brass letter opener resting near a stack of unread mail.
I picked up a pen with my right hand, pretending to comply with his demands.
With my left hand, I discreetly grabbed the brass letter opener and hid it behind my back.
I asked Henderson how much Ethan was paying him to pull the trigger tonight.
Henderson laughed mockingly, stating that keeping his own freedom was payment enough.
As he stepped closer to read what I was writing, I violently threw the heavy brass letter opener directly at his face.

The sharp metal struck him above the eye, causing him to stagger backward with a sharp cry of pain.
I lunged for the heavy desk lamp, smashing it forcefully against the office’s glass window.
