Chapter 9 - The Decoy

The police officers immediately raised their weapons, shouting at Nathan to freeze.

Nathan ignored them, yanking a sleek, silver flash drive from the inside pocket of his ruined tuxedo jacket.

He held it above his head like a religious artifact, his eyes wild and manic.

"Do you want to know how Ashford Capital really made its billions?" Nathan screamed to the crowd of horrified elites.

"I hacked into her private servers last week!"

Vanessa watched from the doorway, her mouth hanging open in shock.

"This drive contains every illegal bribe, every black-market real estate deal, and every corrupt politician Serena’s father bought over the last thirty years!" Nathan shouted triumphantly.

"Arrest me, but you better arrest her too, because her entire empire is built on blood money!"

The lead detective hesitated for a fraction of a second, looking toward Serena.

The elite guests began to whisper frantically, wondering if the flawless Chairwoman of Ashford Capital was actually a criminal mastermind.

Serena didn't flinch.

She didn't run, and she didn't call for her lawyers.

She simply let out a soft, genuinely amused laugh.

Nathan lowered his arm slightly, confused by her complete lack of fear.

"You really think you are a genius, don't you, Nathan?" Serena asked, stepping closer to him.

"You think you bypassed military-grade server encryption from a laptop in your home office?"

Serena held out her hand, gesturing for him to surrender the drive.

"I knew you were trying to access my secure files three months ago," Serena explained, her voice echoing through the quiet room.

"So, I had Marcus create a decoy folder on the server, filled with fabricated documents and fake ledgers."

Nathan's face went completely blank as the horrifying realization set in.

"You spent the last three months downloading useless, fake files that I intentionally fed to you," Serena smiled.

"That flash drive is completely worthless."

Nathan stared at the silver drive in his hand, his final act of vengeance dissolving into thin air.

He let out a guttural scream of pure rage and threw the flash drive violently across the room.

Before he could take another step, two police officers tackled him to the floor, slamming his hands behind his back and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

At the entrance, Vanessa was also shoved against the wall and handcuffed, her designer gown tearing at the seam.

"You ruined my life!" Nathan screamed as the officers dragged him toward the exit.

Serena stood tall, the ultimate victor in a war he never knew he was fighting.

"No, Nathan," Serena replied quietly as he was pulled through the brass doors.

"I just stopped paying for it."

The ballroom remained silent for a long moment after the criminals were removed.

Then, Harrison Vance stepped back up to the podium and began to clap his hands.

Slowly, the rest of the billionaire guests joined in, until the entire room erupted in a standing ovation for the undisputed queen of Miami.
