Chapter 1 - The Shattered Facade

The heavy wooden front door closed with a firm click, sealing the silence inside the oceanfront estate.
Through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, Serena watched Nathan’s luxury town car pull out of the driveway.
Vanessa was sitting right beside him in the backseat, leaning intimately against his shoulder.
Serena did not shed a single tear.
She simply knelt on the cold marble floor and picked up the last broken piece of the porcelain platter.
Eleanor Langley scoffed from the hallway, swirling her glass of expensive imported wine.
"Make sure the kitchen is absolutely spotless before you even think about going to sleep," her mother-in-law commanded.
"Nathan works far too hard to come home to a dirty house."
Serena stood up and dropped the broken pieces into the trash bin with a loud, final crash.
She turned to face Eleanor, and for the first time in seven years, her posture was entirely different.
The meek, submissive daughter-in-law was suddenly gone.
Serena’s eyes were cold, calculating, and dangerously calm.
"You can clean it yourself, Eleanor," Serena said, her voice steady and smooth.
Eleanor gasped, nearly dropping her crystal wine glass onto the floor.
"Excuse me?" Eleanor snapped, her face turning red with sudden outrage.
"You heard me," Serena replied, untying her apron and letting it fall carelessly to the floor.
"I am done playing the grateful charity case for a family that survives entirely on my money."
Before Eleanor could process the insult, Serena turned her back and walked toward the grand staircase.
She entered the master bedroom and immediately locked the heavy wooden door behind her.
Her cell phone, a heavily encrypted device hidden at the bottom of her vanity drawer, began to vibrate.
She answered the call, pressing the phone to her ear.
"Ms. Ashford," her personal assistant, Marcus, said through the secure line.
"The helicopter is waiting on the private helipad just two miles from the estate."
Serena walked into her massive walk-in closet and pushed aside a row of modest, cheap dresses.
Behind a hidden panel was a biometric safe.
She pressed her thumb against the scanner, and the heavy steel door hissed open to reveal her true wardrobe.
"Is the custom gown ready in Miami, Marcus?" she asked, pulling out a velvet jewelry box.
"Yes, ma'am, and your executive team is already stationed at the museum," Marcus confirmed.
"Excellent," Serena said, snapping the velvet box open to retrieve a pair of flawless diamond earrings.
"It is time to remind Nathan exactly who owns the ground he walks on."
Just as she hung up the phone, a text message notification chimed on her everyday device.
It was from Nathan.

She opened the message and stared at the photograph he had sent from the back of the town car.
It was a picture of Vanessa smiling, wearing the exact three-million-dollar sapphire necklace that Serena’s late father had given her, the one Nathan claimed was lost during their last vacation.
