Chapter 8 - The Fatal Recording

The ballroom descended into an eerie, terrifying silence.
Even Eleanor stopped crying, staring at Vanessa with wide, horrified eyes.
Nathan scrambled to his feet, his face entirely drained of color.
"Shut up, Vanessa!" Nathan screamed, taking a desperate step toward her before the guards shoved him back.
"Don't listen to her, she's a liar trying to save herself!"
Vanessa ignored him, violently yanking her arm free from one of the security guards.
She reached into her expensive clutch and pulled out a small, silver digital audio recorder.
"I never trusted him," Vanessa sneered, looking directly at Serena.
"I knew he would try to throw me under the bus if the financial fraud was ever discovered."
Vanessa held the recorder high in the air and pressed the play button.
Nathan's voice, distorted but unmistakable, echoed clearly through the silent museum ballroom.
"Once the merger is finalized and the money is in the Cayman accounts, I need you to handle the final step, Vanessa," the recording played.
"What exactly do you want me to do about Serena?" Vanessa’s recorded voice asked.
There was a brief pause on the tape, filled only with the sound of ice clinking in a glass.
"I want you to cut the brake lines on her car before she drives back to Naples next weekend," Nathan's voice stated coldly.
"If she dies in a tragic accident, I inherit whatever small life insurance policy she has, and there will be no messy divorce."
The recording clicked off.
The silence that followed was heavy enough to crush a man.
Serena stood perfectly still on the stage, her expression completely unreadable as she stared down at the man she had loved for seven years.
He hadn't just humiliated her; he had actively planned to end her life to secure his stolen wealth.
Eleanor collapsed to the floor in a dead faint, unable to process the monstrous reality of her son.
Camille dropped to her knees beside her mother, screaming for a doctor.
Nathan was hyperventilating, backing away toward the center of the room like a trapped animal.
"Serena, please," Nathan begged, tears streaming down his face as his arrogance completely shattered.
"It was just talk, I was drunk, I never would have actually hurt you!"
Serena slowly stepped down from the stage, her crimson gown gliding silently over the marble floor.
She stopped right in front of him, looking into his terrified, pathetic eyes.
"You are absolutely right, Nathan," Serena whispered, her voice colder than ice.
"You will never have the chance to hurt me."
The heavy brass doors of the ballroom violently swung open, crashing against the walls.
A dozen armed police officers stormed into the room, their badges shining under the crystal chandeliers.
"Nathan Langley and Vanessa Reed!" the lead detective shouted, drawing his weapon.
"You are both under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, corporate espionage, and grand larceny."
Nathan looked at the police, then back at Serena, a look of pure madness flashing in his eyes.

"If I am going to prison," Nathan roared, reaching wildly into his jacket pocket.
"I am taking your entire legacy down with me!"
