Chapter 3 - The Illusions of Grandeur

The Coastal Legacy Gala was a dazzling display of excessive wealth and absolute privilege.

Crystal chandeliers cast a warm, golden glow over the museum’s massive main ballroom.

Waiters in white gloves drifted silently through the crowd, offering glasses of rare champagne and caviar.

Nathan stood near the center of the room, radiating an arrogant, artificial confidence.

Vanessa was glued to his side, her emerald gown catching the light as she laughed too loudly at the mayor's jokes.

Eleanor and Camille were also there, mingling with wealthy socialites and pretending they came from old, established money.

"Nathan, darling, everyone is staring at you two," Eleanor purred, walking over with a smug smile.

"You and Vanessa look like the true power couple of Miami tonight."

Nathan adjusted his tuxedo jacket and smiled down at Vanessa.

"Tonight is the night everything changes for us," Nathan said smoothly.

"Once I announce the merger, Langley Meridian Group will be untouchable, and we won't have to hide anymore."

Vanessa reached up and touched the stolen sapphire necklace resting against her collarbone.

"And what about your little housewife back in Naples?" Vanessa teased, a cruel smirk playing on her lips.

Nathan rolled his eyes, taking a sip of his bourbon.

"Serena is completely clueless," he scoffed.

"She is probably still on her hands and knees scrubbing the kitchen floor."

Suddenly, the gentle classical music playing in the ballroom faded away to silence.

The host of the gala, an elderly billionaire named Harrison Vance, stepped up to the crystal podium.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Harrison announced, his voice echoing through the massive room.

"Tonight, we have the rare and distinct honor of welcoming our most generous benefactor."

A murmur of excitement rippled through the crowd of elite guests.

"For the first time in five years, the Chairwoman of Ashford Capital has decided to grace us with her presence," Harrison declared.

Nathan stood up straighter, a triumphant grin spreading across his face.

He looked at Vanessa and gave her a subtle, encouraging nod.

Vanessa let go of Nathan's arm and confidently began walking toward the grand staircase near the podium.

The crowd parted for her, assuming she was the one Harrison was introducing.

Vanessa smiled for the flashing cameras, raising her chin as if she owned the entire room.

Harrison Vance looked completely confused as Vanessa approached his podium.

"Excuse me, young lady, but who exactly are you?" Harrison asked into the microphone.

Vanessa smiled arrogantly and pulled a folded legal document from her designer clutch.

"I am Vanessa Reed, the officially appointed proxy for the Chairwoman of Ashford Capital," Vanessa lied smoothly.
