Chapter 8 - The Hostage

My husband’s arrogant, completely unhinged face filled the small screen of Lily's phone.
He was standing outside in the pouring rain, perfectly illuminated by the burning wreckage of the front porch.
He was not alone.
He was holding a heavy silver pistol directly against the temple of my sister, Rachel.
Rachel was sobbing hysterically on her knees in the mud, begging for her miserable life.
"Your treacherous sister tried to steal the money from me and run away," my husband laughed cruelly through the phone.
He completely explained that there is absolutely no honor among greedy, desperate thieves.
"Send Lily out of the house right now with the original flash drive, or I blow your sister's brains out," he demanded.
I stared at the screen, completely torn by the impossible, horrific choice entirely in front of me.
Rachel had absolutely betrayed me in the worst possible way imaginable.
She had conspired to have me locked in an asylum and actively tried to murder me earlier today.
But I could not just sit completely safe in a bunker and watch my own sister be executed on live video.
My father aggressively grabbed the phone from my hand and entirely ended the video call without hesitation.
"She made her choice, Sarah, we have to protect the child," my father commanded fiercely.
We climbed down into the dark, damp escape tunnel and began crawling rapidly toward the lake.
The deafening sound of a massive explosion completely rocked the foundation of the house above us.
The mercenaries had finally blown through the heavy steel door of the empty panic room.
We burst out of the tunnel directly underneath the wooden dock completely hidden by the dark water.
A small, sleek, highly powered motorboat was perfectly tied to a concealed wooden pylon.
My father aggressively started the incredibly quiet engine, and we sped out into the absolute darkness of the massive lake.
We were entirely halfway across the freezing water when the dark sky was suddenly illuminated.
A blinding searchlight from a cartel helicopter violently swept across the dark, choppy waves.
The brilliant beam of light stopped directly on our small, completely exposed boat.
A heavy machine gun mounted on the helicopter began to aggressively fire wildly toward us.
Bullets violently shredded the dark water all around our fragile vessel.
I completely covered Lily with my own body, entirely praying for an absolute miracle.

Suddenly, a loud, robotic voice boomed entirely from a massive megaphone above us.
"This is the FBI, entirely lower your weapons and completely surrender immediately!"
