Chapter 3 - The Ultimate Betrayal

I stared at my sister in absolute, mind-numbing disbelief.

Rachel looked at me with cold, entirely emotionless eyes as she raised the heavy pistol.

She demanded to know exactly where I had hidden the manila envelope.

I realized with a sickening wave of nausea that Rachel had been working with my husband this entire time.

She had been the unknown voice on Lily's secret video recording, casually plotting to destroy my entire life.

Rachel took a step closer, completely ignoring the tears streaming down my face.

She explained that she had always hated me for inheriting the massive family trust fund instead of her.

She and my husband had orchestrated a flawless plan to lock me in an asylum and split the millions between them.

But Lily's unexpected bravery in court had completely ruined their carefully constructed timeline.

I slowly shifted my weight, desperately calculating the distance between us.

I told Rachel that the envelope was currently sitting in the hands of a federal judge.

Her face flushed with sudden, uncontrolled anger as the realization hit her.

She raised the gun directly toward my chest and placed her finger firmly on the trigger.

I did not hesitate for a single second.

I violently hurled the heavy bronze umbrella stand directly at her head.

The metal object struck her shoulder, causing her to scream and drop the weapon.

I grabbed Lily by her small arm and sprinted out the front door into the pouring rain.

We jumped into my car, and I slammed my foot onto the gas pedal.

We sped away from the neighborhood, leaving my treacherous sister entirely behind.

I drove for twenty minutes until I finally felt a tiny shred of safety.

I reached for my phone to call the police, but my screen suddenly lit up with an unknown caller ID.

I answered it tentatively, keeping my eyes fixed on the dark road ahead.

A deep, unfamiliar man's voice echoed through the car speakers.

"You really shouldn't be driving that car, Sarah, because I cut your brake lines an hour ago."
