Chapter 2 - The Shattered Sanctuary

The heavy courtroom doors slammed shut behind my husband, leaving a suffocating silence in the room.

The judge immediately granted me temporary sole custody of Lily and issued a permanent restraining order.

I thanked my attorney and hurried Lily out of the courthouse to my car.

My hands were shaking so violently that I could barely insert the key into the ignition.

I asked Lily where she had found that terrifying envelope.

She quietly explained that she had seen her father unscrew a metal air vent in his home office late at night.

After he fell asleep, she used a screwdriver to open the vent and found the hidden documents inside.

I hugged her tightly, entirely overwhelmed by the sheer bravery of my ten-year-old little girl.

We drove back to our suburban house to quickly pack some bags and find a safe hotel.

I unlocked the front door and stepped into the main hallway.

A freezing rush of wind hit my face immediately.

The heavy glass sliding door in the living room had been completely shattered into thousands of pieces.

Our entire home had been violently ransacked while we were at the courthouse.

Couch cushions were slashed open, paintings were ripped off the walls, and the floor was covered in broken glass.

Someone had been desperately searching for the exact envelope that Lily had brought to the judge.

I grabbed Lily's hand and slowly backed toward the front door to escape.

Suddenly, I heard the distinct sound of heavy boots crunching on the broken glass in the kitchen.

I pushed Lily behind me and grabbed a heavy bronze umbrella stand from the entryway.

The intruder stepped slowly out of the kitchen shadows, holding a suppressed silver pistol.

It was not a random burglar or a hired cartel mercenary.

The person holding the gun was my own younger sister, Rachel.
