Chapter 6 - The Target

The audio recording played crystal clear in the absolute silence of the dusty cabin.
My husband was calmly providing a highly trained assassin with my father's exact daily schedule.
My father was a retired federal prosecutor who had spent his entire career putting cartel bosses behind bars.
My husband knew that my father would never stop hunting him if anything suspicious happened to me.
So he had ordered a preemptive, highly coordinated strike to eliminate my father tonight.
I checked the timestamp on the chilling audio file and felt my heart completely stop.
The assassination was scheduled to happen in exactly forty-five minutes at my father's secluded lake house.
I could not simply hide in this cabin and let my brave father be brutally murdered in his sleep.
I found an old set of keys hanging on a rusty nail near the cabin's back door.
I looked out the window and saw a beat-up, ancient pickup truck parked in the tall grass.
I prayed to God that it still had gas, and I rushed Lily outside into the pouring rain.
The old engine violently sputtered for a terrifying moment before finally roaring to life.
I slammed the truck into gear and tore down the muddy logging road toward the distant lake.
I drove like an absolute maniac, completely ignoring every single speed limit on the empty highway.
We arrived at my father's massive property with less than five minutes to spare.
I skidded the truck to a halt on the gravel driveway and sprinted toward the heavy front door.
I pounded aggressively on the wood, screaming for my father to wake up and let us inside.
The door swung open, but my father was not standing there in his pajamas.
He was fully dressed in dark tactical gear, holding a massive military-grade assault rifle.
He quickly pulled us inside and locked the heavy steel deadbolts behind us.
"I have been entirely expecting them to come for me for weeks," my father said calmly.
He led us to a heavily fortified panic room completely hidden behind a massive bookshelf in his study.
He handed me a loaded handgun and told me to completely lock the heavy steel door from the inside.

Just as the metal door sealed shut, the power to the entire lake house was violently cut.
And then, the deafening sound of an explosion completely shattered the front of the house.
