Chapter 4 - The Downward Spiral

I immediately slammed my foot down onto the brake pedal.
The pedal sank completely to the floorboards with absolutely zero resistance.
The car was hurtling down a steep, winding mountain road at over sixty miles per hour.
Panic violently seized my chest as I desperately pumped the useless brakes again and again.
Lily screamed in the passenger seat as the car drifted dangerously close to the steep cliff edge.
I forcefully yanked the emergency brake lever up with all of my remaining strength.
The rear tires violently locked up, sending the car into a terrifying, uncontrolled spin across the wet asphalt.
We crashed heavily into the metal guardrail, the airbags deploying with a deafening explosion of white powder.
The car finally ground to a halting stop, smoking and completely ruined.
I frantically unbuckled my seatbelt and checked Lily for any severe injuries.
By some absolute miracle, we were both completely unharmed aside from a few minor bruises.
I kicked my jammed door open and dragged Lily out into the freezing mountain rain.
We could not wait around for the police because the man on the phone knew exactly where we were going.
We scrambled down the muddy embankment and hid entirely inside the dense, dark forest.
I pulled out my phone and dialed the only person left in the world I could actually trust.
I called Detective Miller, an old childhood friend who now worked for the major crimes division.
He answered immediately and promised to pick us up at a nearby abandoned gas station.
We hiked through the thick mud for an hour until we finally saw Miller's unmarked police cruiser waiting in the dark.
I threw my arms around him in pure relief as he ushered us into the warm backseat.
He started driving toward the secure federal precinct in the city.
Miller kindly asked me to hand over the flash drive with Lily's videos so he could log it into official evidence.
I reached into my bag, feeling completely safe for the first time all day.
But as Miller reached his hand back to take the drive, the dashboard light illuminated his wrist.

He was wearing a highly exclusive, limited-edition gold Rolex.
It was the exact same custom watch I had seen my husband buy for his "silent business partner" last month.
