Chapter 5 - The Desperate Escape

My blood ran completely cold as I stared at the shiny gold watch on the detective's wrist.

Miller was not taking us to the police station to protect us.

He was entirely on my husband's illegal payroll, and he was driving us straight to our deaths.

I slowly pulled my hand out of my bag, leaving the precious flash drive safely hidden at the bottom.

Instead, my fingers wrapped tightly around a small canister of pepper spray I kept on my keychain.

I asked Miller a completely random question about his family to lower his guard.

He glanced at me in the rearview mirror, offering a fake, entirely reassuring smile.

I lunged forward over the center console and aggressively emptied the pepper spray directly into his eyes.

Miller screamed in absolute agony, entirely releasing the steering wheel to claw blindly at his burning face.

I grabbed the heavy wheel and violently jerked it to the right side of the dark highway.

The police cruiser aggressively jumped the curb and crashed nose-first into a deep, muddy ditch.

The airbags deployed again, pinning the blinded, cursing detective to his seat.

I kicked the rear door open and grabbed Lily's hand, sprinting wildly back into the unforgiving forest.

We ran blindly through the thick brush until my lungs felt like they were actively bleeding.

We finally stumbled upon an old, secluded hunting cabin hidden completely off the main road.

I broke the small window on the back door and reached inside to unlock the deadbolt.

The cabin was dusty and abandoned, but it offered a temporary shelter from the freezing rain.

I barricaded the heavy wooden door with a large rusted refrigerator to keep the monsters out.

I sat on the wooden floor, completely exhausted, and began crying silent tears of absolute despair.

Lily sat quietly next to me and pulled her small phone completely out of her wet pocket.

She gently wiped the screen and told me she had one more thing to show me.

I looked at her in confusion as she opened a hidden, encrypted folder on her device.

"I didn't just record Daddy talking about the divorce money, Mommy," she whispered softly.

She pressed play on a completely new audio file that she had hidden from the judge.

It was my husband ordering a cartel hitman to assassinate my father.
