Chapter 7 - The Ambush

The four heavily armed mercenaries raised their weapons, training their laser sights directly on Liam and me.
Gloria stepped out of the luxury limousine, wearing an expensive fur coat and a look of absolute, venomous hatred.
"You really thought you could outsmart our family, didn't you?" Gloria sneered, walking slowly toward us.
Liam pulled his sidearm and pointed it directly at Gloria's head, refusing to back down despite being vastly outnumbered.
"Tell your men to drop their guns, or I will end you right here, you miserable old witch," Liam growled fiercely.
Gloria didn't even flinch at the threat; she simply smiled a cold, calculating smile.
She reached into her designer purse and pulled out a small, glowing electronic tablet.
"If you shoot me, the dead-man's switch on this tablet will automatically transfer your father's remaining assets to the cartel," she threatened.
I stared at the tablet, realizing that Gloria was not just an annoying, overbearing mother-in-law.
She was the actual mastermind behind the entire criminal syndicate, pulling the strings while Arthur and Daniel acted as her puppets.
"You orchestrated the entire marriage just to get access to my family's wealth," I said, putting the terrifying puzzle pieces together.
Gloria laughed loudly, the sound echoing harshly off the concrete walls of the parking garage.
"Daniel is an idiot, but he was handsome enough to trick a lonely, grieving woman into signing a marriage certificate," she mocked.
She explained that she had spent years grooming Daniel to be the perfect trojan horse for her massive financial takeover.
The abuse, the gaslighting, and the endless psychological torture were all designed to completely break my spirit and force me to surrender my estate.
"But you were stubbornly resistant, so I finally ordered him to eliminate you and forge the paperwork," Gloria confessed without a hint of remorse.
Liam’s finger tightened on the trigger of his gun, his protective rage boiling over as he heard the horrific truth.
"Hand over the boy, and I will let you both walk away with your pathetic lives," Gloria demanded, gesturing to the handcuffed Daniel.
Daniel whimpered pathetically on the floor, begging his mother to save him from federal prison.
I looked at Liam, knowing that if we gave them Daniel, they would eventually hunt us down and kill us anyway.
"We are not giving him to you," I stated firmly, standing tall in the face of impossible odds.
Suddenly, the piercing wail of police sirens erupted from the street level above the garage.
Red and blue lights began flashing furiously through the ventilation grates of the underground structure.
I had secretly dialed 911 on my Apple Watch the moment Gloria's men stepped out of the shadows.
Gloria cursed loudly, realizing her flawless master plan was completely falling apart in a matter of minutes.
"Kill them all!" she screamed at her mercenaries, turning to run back toward the safety of her armored limousine.
The mercenaries opened fire, the deafening roar of automatic weapons echoing brutally in the confined space.
Liam shoved me hard behind a massive concrete pillar just as a hail of bullets shattered the windows of the nearby cars.
He returned fire with expert precision, striking two of the mercenaries in the legs and dropping them to the floor.
The police SWAT team burst through the garage entrance, flooding the area with heavily armored officers and blinding tactical lights.
The remaining mercenaries immediately dropped their weapons and surrendered to the overwhelming force.
Gloria tried to speed away in the limousine, but a massive police armored vehicle smashed into the front bumper, pinning her car against a wall.
Officers swarmed the vehicle, dragging a screaming, kicking Gloria out of the backseat and slamming her onto the concrete.
The nightmare was finally over, and the entire criminal family was exactly where they belonged.

As I walked toward the police barricade to give my statement, a young officer handed me an evidence bag recovered from Gloria's purse.
Inside the plastic bag was a stack of old, faded letters that made my blood run completely cold.
