Chapter 3 - The Empty Vault

The police officers shoved Daniel back, warning him that one more outburst would land him in the back of a squad car.
Gloria grabbed her son by the arm, weeping dramatically as she dragged him toward their parked vehicle.
I watched them drive away, but the chilling threat about my father's safe deposit box echoed endlessly in my mind.
My late father had left behind a highly secured vault at the central bank downtown.
He had always told me that the box contained the original documents to a massive offshore trust fund meant only for me.
I rushed back inside the house, grabbed my coat, and drove straight to the heavily guarded financial district.
I walked into the massive marble lobby of the bank, my heart pounding aggressively against my ribs.
I presented my identification and the specialized metal key to the vault manager, a stern woman named Helen.
Helen looked at her computer screen, her brow furrowing in deep confusion as she typed in my details.
"I am sorry, but this box was accessed and completely emptied at eight o'clock this morning," Helen stated flatly.
I gripped the edge of her mahogany desk, feeling the ground completely drop out from underneath my feet.
"That is impossible, because I am the only authorized person with the key," I argued desperately.
Helen printed out a security log and slid it across the polished desk for me to examine.
The log showed that Daniel had entered the vault using a heavily notarized, specialized power of attorney document.
He had forged my signature and brought in a corrupt notary to bypass the bank's strict security protocols.
"He took everything," I whispered, realizing the true scale of his devastating financial betrayal.
Helen handed me a small, sealed white envelope that had been left behind inside the empty metal box.
My name was scrawled across the front of the envelope in Daniel's messy, rushed handwriting.
I tore the paper open with trembling fingers and pulled out a single, neatly folded sheet of stationary.
The note read: "I always knew you were too weak to manage this empire, so I took what rightfully belongs to a real man."
Tears of sheer frustration burned in my eyes, but I refused to let them fall in public.
I flipped the note over, noticing a faint, embossed logo pressed into the thick paper.
It was the corporate crest of Arthur Sterling, my father's ruthless former business partner.
My father had cut all ties with Arthur years ago after discovering he was involved in organized crime.
If Daniel was working with Arthur, this was no longer just a bitter divorce over a house and some money.
This was a massive, dangerous criminal conspiracy designed to steal my entire family legacy.
I immediately dialed my lawyer, Mara, and told her to meet me at Arthur Sterling's corporate headquarters.
I drove across the city, determined to confront the men who were trying to destroy my life.
I arrived at the towering glass skyscraper and marched directly up to the executive penthouse suite on the top floor.
I pushed past the protesting secretary and threw open the heavy double doors to Arthur's private office.
Arthur was sitting behind his desk, holding the original documents from my father's trust fund in his hands.
May you like
But he was not alone in the room.
Sitting across from him, sipping a glass of champagne, was my lawyer, Mara.
