Chapter 10 - The Garden of Ashes

I pulled the stack of dusty, yellowed documents from the hidden compartment of the fireproof cabinet.

My hands trembled as I realized these were the deeply guarded, personal files my father had hidden before his death.

The next morning, the bright sunshine poured through the windows of my completely secure, peaceful home.

Liam came downstairs, brewing a fresh pot of coffee and smiling at me like we were kids again.

The morning news was completely dominated by the massive federal indictments handed down to Daniel, Gloria, and Arthur Sterling.

They were all denied bail and were officially going to spend the rest of their miserable lives rotting in maximum-security prison.

I walked out to the back patio with my hot coffee, looking out at the beautiful garden I had reclaimed.

I hired a landscaping crew to gather all of Daniel's mud-soaked, ruined clothing and throw it into a massive fire pit.

I stood there and watched the expensive fabrics burn into a pile of gray ashes, completely cleansing my property of his toxic memory.

My bank accounts were fully restored, my sister Chloe had moved out of state in disgrace, and my assets were one hundred percent secure.

I finally felt the crushing weight of the past six years lift completely off my shoulders, leaving me light and entirely free.

I was a wealthy, successful, independent woman, and no one would ever be able to control or abuse me ever again.

The ultimate victory tasted sweeter than I could have ever possibly imagined.

Later that evening, I sat alone in my quiet office and finally opened the thick envelope I had found in the hidden compartment.

Inside was a handwritten letter from my late father, dated just a few days before his suspicious death.

The letter explicitly stated that Daniel was not a random con artist who happened to target my immense wealth.

According to the documents, Daniel had been specifically hired and sent to marry me by my supposedly dead mother.

And her final instruction was that if Daniel failed to steal the estate, she would return to finish the job herself.
