Chapter 4 - The Betrayal

I froze in the doorway, completely paralyzed by the sight of my trusted attorney sitting with my enemy.

Mara slowly lowered her crystal champagne flute and looked at me without a single ounce of guilt in her eyes.

"You are early," Mara said in a chillingly calm voice, adjusting her expensive designer blazer.

"You have been working with them this entire time?" I gasped, the agonizing reality of her betrayal sinking in.

Mara stood up and walked over to Arthur's desk, placing a comforting hand on the back of his leather chair.

She explained that Daniel had approached her months ago with a highly lucrative proposition to steal my estate.

She was the one who drafted the forged power of attorney that allowed Daniel to empty the bank vault.

"I am the best lawyer in this city, and you paid me a miserable hourly rate," Mara sneered with pure contempt.

Arthur smiled smoothly, steepling his fingers together as he looked at me like a predator observing its prey.

"Daniel is a foolish, greedy boy, but he was incredibly useful in dismantling your father's protective legal walls," Arthur stated.

I realized that everyone I had trusted was nothing but a pawn in a massive, orchestrated scheme to ruin me.

"I will go to the police and have you all arrested for fraud and conspiracy," I threatened, taking a step backward.

Arthur let out a deep, echoing laugh that sent a terrifying shiver down my spine.

"You won't be going anywhere," Arthur said, pressing a hidden button underneath his massive desk.

The heavy wooden doors behind me instantly slammed shut with a deafening crash, the electronic locks clicking into place.

I ran to the doors and frantically pulled on the brass handles, but they refused to budge even an inch.

"We simply need you to sign these final asset transfer forms to make our takeover completely legal," Mara explained.

She pulled a silver pen from her pocket and slid a stack of legal contracts across the polished conference table.

"I will never sign away my father's legacy to a group of common thieves," I declared fiercely.

Arthur stood up from his chair, his tall, imposing figure casting a dark shadow across the luxurious office.

He walked toward me, pulling a small, loaded handgun from the inner pocket of his tailored suit jacket.

He pointed the weapon directly at my chest, his eyes completely devoid of any human empathy.

"You will sign the papers, or my men will dispose of your body in the river tonight," Arthur promised coldly.

I backed against the locked doors, my mind racing desperately for any possible avenue of escape.

I looked around the room and noticed the massive, floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the bustling city below.

I grabbed a heavy bronze sculpture from a nearby pedestal and hurled it with all my strength toward the window.

The reinforced glass shattered into a million sparkling pieces, triggering an ear-piercing security alarm throughout the entire building.

The sudden noise and chaos caused Arthur to flinch and momentarily lower his weapon in shock.

I dove behind the heavy wooden desk, praying the police would arrive before Arthur could recover.

But instead of Arthur's voice, I heard the sound of heavy boots kicking open the locked office doors.

A man in a dark tactical uniform burst into the room with an assault rifle, but he was not a police officer.

He pointed the rifle directly at Arthur and Mara, ordering them to drop their weapons immediately.

The tactical intruder pulled off his black mask, revealing a face I never thought I would see again.
