Chapter 2 - The Stolen Sister

I stared at the crumpled jewelry receipt, my hands shaking so violently that the paper rattled in the quiet hallway.
My own sister was secretly engaged to the man who had just assaulted me the night before.
I pulled out my cell phone and immediately dialed Chloe's number, demanding an explanation for this ultimate betrayal.
The call went straight to voicemail, greeting me with her cheerful, innocent recorded voice.
I threw the phone onto the kitchen counter, feeling a toxic mixture of profound grief and boiling rage.
I realized that Daniel had been planning to abandon me and move on with Chloe while keeping my assets for himself.
The sudden, sharp ringing of the front doorbell pulled me out of my dark, racing thoughts.
I looked at the digital security camera feed on the wall monitor and saw Daniel standing on the porch.
He had returned exactly at noon, just as he promised, with his mother Gloria standing proudly right behind him.
Daniel tried to turn the brass handle, but the new deadbolt held the door firmly shut against his weight.
He frowned, aggressively jiggling the handle before pounding his heavy fist against the solid oak door.
"Open this door right now!" he shouted, his voice muffled but full of arrogant authority.
I walked to the front window, pulled back the sheer curtain, and looked out at them with a completely blank expression.
Daniel's face turned a dangerous shade of red when he realized I was intentionally locking him out.
Gloria stepped forward, pressing her face against the glass and screaming that I was an ungrateful, disrespectful wife.
I didn't say a single word in response to her hateful insults.
I just pressed a button on a remote control, opening the mechanical side gate that led directly to the backyard garden.
Daniel shoved the gate open and stormed into the yard, ready to break a window to get inside.
Instead, he stopped dead in his tracks, staring in absolute horror at the muddy devastation of his entire wardrobe.
His mother shrieked, running over to pull a ruined, mud-soaked Armani suit jacket from the wet dirt.
"You are crazy!" Daniel roared, spinning around to face the house with pure, unhinged fury in his eyes.
He pulled his cell phone from his pocket and immediately dialed the emergency police dispatch number.
He shouted into the phone, claiming that his mentally unstable wife was destroying his property and holding his house hostage.
Ten minutes later, two local police cruisers pulled into the driveway with their lights flashing brightly.
Daniel rushed over to the officers, playing the role of the terrified, victimized husband to absolute perfection.
I calmly unlocked the front door and stepped out onto the porch, holding a thick manila folder in my hands.
The lead officer placed his hand on his weapon and ordered me to step away from the doorway.
Daniel smirked at me behind the officer's back, utterly convinced that I was about to be arrested and dragged away in handcuffs.
I handed the folder to the officer, explaining that the house belonged exclusively to me and that Daniel was a violent trespasser.
The officer reviewed the property deed, the prenuptial agreement, and the eviction notice signed by my attorney.
The policeman turned around and firmly told Daniel that he needed to leave the premises immediately or face arrest for trespassing.
Daniel's smug smile vanished instantly, replaced by a look of sheer, panicked desperation.

He lunged forward, pointing a shaking finger directly at my face while the officers restrained him.
"You think you won, but I already cleaned out your father's secret safe deposit box this morning!" he screamed.
