Chapter 7 - The Desperate Rescue

My blood turned to pure ice.

The Russian sanctuary had been a trap from the very beginning.

Viktor had sold me out to the Romanos the moment I walked through his doors.

I dropped the photograph and ran back to the stolen motorcycle.

I drove back to Brooklyn faster than I had ever driven in my life.

I ignored every red light and siren in the city.

I reached the Volkov warehouse in less than twenty minutes.

The heavy steel doors were wide open.

There were no guards standing outside.

I drew my weapon and moved silently into the massive building.

The interior was completely silent and devoid of life.

I found Maya’s phone smashed into pieces on the concrete floor.

Lily’s pink rabbit lay a few feet away, covered in dark blood.

A wave of absolute nausea washed over me.

I followed a trail of muddy footprints leading toward the loading docks at the back.

I stepped out onto the wet pier.

Viktor was standing near a black speedboat, smoking a cigar.

He looked at me without a shred of guilt in his eyes.

I raised my gun and aimed it directly at his head.

I demanded to know where they had taken my daughter.

Viktor blew a cloud of smoke into the cold air.

He told me Vincent had taken the lawyer and the child to the old Moretti shipyard.

They were preparing to execute them on my own territory.

I asked Viktor why he betrayed his honor for the Romanos.

Viktor smiled a bloody, broken smile.

He stepped aside to reveal an explosive vest strapped tightly to his chest.

He told me the Romanos had his wife.

Before I could react, Viktor pressed the detonator button in his hand.
