Chapter 2 - The Ambush

I tackled Lily to the floor instantly.
Maya dove behind her heavy mahogany desk as more bullets ripped through the office.
The deafening sound of automatic gunfire echoed off the marble walls.
I pulled my pistol from my shoulder holster.
I knew this was not a random hit.
Someone had tracked us.
Only one person had access to the encrypted GPS tracker in my personal SUV.
Vincent.
My most trusted friend and head of security had sold me out.
I grabbed Lily and pressed her face into my chest.
I crawled toward the heavy wooden door leading to the emergency stairwell.
Maya followed closely behind me, blood dripping from a cut on her cheek.
We burst into the stairwell just as the office doors were kicked open.
I heard the heavy boots of professional mercenaries charging in after us.
We ran down six flights of concrete stairs.
My lungs burned, but I did not slow down.
We reached the underground garage.
I knew we could not use my SUV.
I shot out the window of a random sedan parked near the exit.
I hotwired the engine in less than ten seconds.
Maya threw Lily into the backseat and jumped in beside her.
I slammed the gas pedal to the floor.
We tore out of the garage and merged violently into the crowded city streets.
I checked the rearview mirror and saw two black tactical vans in pursuit.
We were completely outgunned and outnumbered.
I swerved down a narrow alleyway, hoping to lose them in the maze of buildings.
Then Maya gasped from the backseat.
May you like
She pointed a shaking finger at Lily’s stuffed rabbit.
A tiny, blinking red light was glowing from inside the rabbit’s stitching.
