Chapter 3 - The Tracker

I slammed on the brakes.

The stolen sedan screeched to a halt behind a row of overflowing dumpsters.

I reached into the backseat and snatched the rabbit from Lily’s hands.

She started to cry, but I had no time to comfort her.

I pulled a tactical knife from my belt and sliced the rabbit’s back open.

I dug through the white cotton stuffing.

My fingers brushed against a cold, hard piece of plastic.

I pulled it out.

It was a military-grade micro-tracker.

Vincent had not tracked my car.

He had planted a tracker on a four-year-old child to ensure he could always find us.

I crushed the device under the heel of my boot.

We abandoned the car immediately.

I led Maya and Lily down into the subway system to disappear into the crowd.

We rode the crowded train in absolute silence for an hour.

I needed a place to hide that Vincent did not know about.

I realized I only had one option left in the city.

We arrived at an abandoned warehouse in Brooklyn owned by the Volkov syndicate.

The Volkovs were my greatest rivals, but they hated the Romano family even more than I did.

I knew the Russian boss, Viktor, respected honor above all else.

We stepped into the dark warehouse.

Dozens of laser sights immediately painted my chest red.

Viktor stepped out of the shadows holding a heavy shotgun.

He looked at me, then down at the crying little girl clinging to my leg.

Viktor lowered his weapon and ordered his men to stand down.

He offered me sanctuary, but his eyes were filled with grim pity.

He told me to turn on the small television sitting on a crate.

The local news was playing a breaking report.

My face was plastered across the screen.

The news anchor announced that Adrian Moretti was officially the prime suspect in the brutal murder of his housekeeper, Claire Bennett.
