Chapter 6 - The Betrayal

Vincent stood perfectly still in the heavy rain.
He had been my right hand for a decade.
We had bled together to build the Moretti empire.
Now, he was looking at me like I was nothing more than a target.
Vincent ordered me to let Vanessa go.
I tightened my grip on Vanessa, keeping her perfectly between Vincent and myself.
I asked Vincent how much the Romanos had paid him to betray his own blood.
Vincent laughed coldly.
He told me this was never about money.
He said the Romanos had promised him the position of Underboss once I was dead.
Vanessa struggled against my grip, cursing at Vincent to take the shot.
I knew Vincent was a master marksman.
He could easily shoot me through Vanessa’s shoulder.
I had to change the dynamic instantly.
I shoved Vanessa violently forward, directly into Vincent's line of sight.
She screamed and stumbled into the muddy street.
I fired two suppressing shots toward Vincent.
The bullets sparked against the brick wall next to his head.
Vincent ducked, losing his aim for a fraction of a second.
I sprinted down the narrow alleyway, disappearing into the absolute darkness.
I navigated the labyrinth of chain-link fences and fire escapes.
I could hear Vincent’s men shouting commands behind me.
I needed to reach the old train station in Queens before they did.
I stole a delivery motorcycle parked behind a diner.
I rode through the storm at reckless speeds, risking everything to reach the locker.
I arrived at the abandoned station just as the sun began to rise.
I found locker number 402 and smashed the rusted padlock with a heavy pipe.
I opened the metal door.
Inside was a thick, waterproof briefcase.
I opened the case, hoping to find the evidence to destroy Vanessa.
The case was completely empty except for a single, freshly printed photograph.
It was a picture of Maya and Lily sleeping on the floor of the Russian warehouse.

Written in red ink across the bottom of the photo was one terrifying sentence.
