Chapter 8 - The Betrayal

I stared at the screen in absolute horror.
Liam looked directly into one of the security cameras.
He knew we were watching from the panic room.
Liam demanded I hand over the silver locket necklace my mother had left me.
He revealed the necklace contained a microchip with the stolen accounting files.
I realized I had worn that exact necklace to the gala.
Liam had orchestrated our entire friendship just to get his hands on that chip.
He threatened to blow open the panic room door with explosives if I refused.
I reached for the clasp of my necklace, willing to give it up to save our lives.
Alessandro grabbed my hand and stopped me.
He refused to let Liam win.
Alessandro grabbed a heavy assault rifle from a weapon rack on the wall.
He hit the manual override button to open the panic room door.
He stepped out to face the mercenaries and protect me.

A gunshot echoed through the penthouse before the door even fully opened.
Alessandro fell backward onto the floor with a dark red stain spreading across his chest.
