Chapter 9 - The Ultimatum

I stared at the glowing screen of my phone, the cold rain washing away the last remnants of my naive hope.

Admiral Vance wasn't hiding in a secure bunker in Washington.

He had personally traveled to Charleston to ensure the complete destruction of the evidence, and he was currently holding my father hostage in a room full of terrified wedding guests.

“Claire,” Vance said smoothly, looking directly into the camera held by one of his operatives.

“I see you managed to survive my initial clean-up crew.”

“You always were incredibly stubborn.”

My father was kneeling on the pristine marble floor, his hands tied behind his back, looking completely broken and terrified.

“Please, Claire,” my father sobbed into the camera, his arrogant pride entirely shattered.

“Just give him what he wants, I don't want to die here.”

I felt a profound, agonizing conflict tear through my chest.

This was the man who had spent thirty-six years belittling my existence, mocking my career, and telling me I was a disappointment.

And now, his life depended entirely on the very military authority he had so deeply despised.

“What do you want, sir?” I asked, keeping my voice completely devoid of emotion.

“Bring the shipping manifests to the estate, alone,” Vance commanded coldly.

“If you bring your SEALs, or if you attempt to contact the authorities, I will execute your father in front of his entire family.”

“You have exactly twenty minutes.”

The video feed cut out abruptly, leaving me standing in the pouring rain with the fate of my family resting in my hands.

“Admiral, you cannot go back there alone,” Jack argued fiercely, recognizing the absolute suicide mission I was facing.

“Vance is a highly trained operative; he will kill you the second you hand over those documents.”

“I know, Jack,” I replied quietly, looking down at the muddy shipping manifests clutched in my hand.

“But if I don't go, he will slaughter everyone in that ballroom to protect his secret.”

I turned to Julian, who was sitting shivering in the mud, and handed him the keys to my forklift.

“Take Melissa, get in my car, and drive as fast as you can to the nearest federal FBI field office,” I ordered the terrified groom.

“Tell them exactly what happened here, and do not stop for anyone.”

Julian nodded frantically, helping a groaning, entirely defeated Melissa into the backseat of my vehicle before tearing out of the shipping yard.

I looked back at Jack, the man who had risked everything just to stand by my side.

“Master Chief, I need you to do exactly as I order, without question,” I said, my voice hardening back into the command tone of a four-star Admiral.

“I am going to walk through those front doors alone, just as Vance demanded.”

“But I need you and your men to establish a hidden perimeter around the estate.”

“When you hear the signal, you breach the ballroom with everything you have.”

“What is the signal, Admiral?” Jack asked, his eyes filled with fierce, unwavering loyalty.

“You will know it when you hear it,” I promised.

I climbed into one of the abandoned SUVs left behind by Vance's clean-up crew and drove aggressively back toward the Whitmore estate.

The massive iron gates were completely wide open, unguarded, welcoming me into the trap perfectly set by my commanding officer.

I parked the vehicle near the grand entrance, took a deep breath, and walked slowly up the marble steps.

My white uniform was completely ruined, stained with blood, mud, and grease, but I walked with the absolute authority of a woman who had nothing left to lose.

I pushed the heavy oak doors open and stepped into the grand foyer.

The beautiful string music had been replaced by the sound of quiet, terrified sobbing.

I walked slowly into the massive ballroom, entirely ignoring the four heavily armed operatives pointing laser sights at my chest.

Admiral Vance was standing near the massive wedding cake, holding his weapon perfectly steady against my father’s trembling head.

“You brought the documents, Claire,” Vance noted with a terrifying smile.

“I am a woman of my word, sir,” I replied calmly, holding the thick stack of papers out in front of me.

“Let my father go, and you can have them.”

Vance laughed, a cold, humorless sound that echoed off the high ceilings.

“You are smarter than this, Claire,” Vance sneered.

“I am not leaving any loose ends today.”

“I am going to take those documents, and then I am going to execute you both for domestic terrorism.”

My father squeezed his eyes shut, preparing for the bullet that would end his life.

I didn't flinch, and I didn't beg for mercy.

I simply looked directly into Admiral Vance’s eyes and smiled a cold, dangerous smile.

“You forgot one fundamental rule of Naval warfare, sir,” I whispered clearly.

“And what is that, Claire?” Vance mocked, clearly enjoying his ultimate victory.

“Never bring paper to a digital fight,” I replied smoothly.

I squeezed the thick stack of shipping manifests tightly in my hand.

And in a single, fluid motion, I threw the papers violently into the air.

As the pages fluttered harmlessly toward the marble floor, a blinding, high-pitched electronic scream erupted from the very center of the stack.
