Chapter 10 - The Last Command

The blinding, high-pitched electronic scream wasn't an alarm; it was a highly specialized, military-grade flashbang I had discreetly hidden inside the hollowed-out center of the thick stack of manifests.

The intense burst of white light and concussive sound violently disoriented everyone in the ballroom.

Admiral Vance instinctively raised his arm to shield his eyes, breaking his perfect aim on my father's head for a fraction of a second.

It was exactly the signal Jack and his men had been waiting for.

Before the smoke even began to clear, the massive glass windows of the ballroom completely shattered inward.

Dozens of elite Navy SEALs poured into the room from every possible angle, moving with terrifying, lethal precision.

“Drop your weapons!” Jack roared, leading the aggressive breach.

Vance’s highly trained operatives realized instantly that they were completely outgunned and outmaneuvered by the best tactical fighters in the world.

They immediately dropped their rifles, raising their hands in absolute surrender.

But Admiral Vance did not surrender.

Blindly, furiously, he swung his pistol away from my father and aimed it directly toward the blurry outline of my white uniform.

I didn't dive for cover, and I didn't reach for my own weapon.

I stood perfectly still, fully prepared to accept the consequences of my final command.

A single, suppressed gunshot echoed sharply through the chaotic room.

But I didn't feel the burning impact of a bullet.

Admiral Vance collapsed heavily onto the polished marble floor, groaning in agony as he clutched a shattered kneecap.

Jack stood ten feet away, his assault rifle perfectly leveled, smoke curling gently from the barrel.

“Target neutralized, Admiral,” Jack reported calmly, lowering his weapon as his men rapidly secured the room.

The absolute silence that followed the gunshot was profound and entirely deafening.

I walked slowly over to where my father was kneeling on the floor, his hands still bound behind his back.

He looked up at me, his eyes wide with a mixture of absolute terror, profound shock, and deep, overwhelming shame.

I pulled a small tactical knife from my belt and effortlessly sliced the thick plastic zip ties binding his wrists.

My father slowly stood up, rubbing his bruised arms, unable to meet my direct gaze.

“Claire,” he whispered, his voice cracking with emotion.

“I... I don't know what to say.”

“You don't have to say anything, Dad,” I replied softly, my voice completely devoid of anger or bitterness.

“I didn't save you today because I wanted your approval.”

“I saved you because it was my duty, and because I am exactly the woman you tried so hard to prevent me from becoming.”

I turned my back on my father and walked over to where Admiral Vance was bleeding profusely on the pristine dance floor.

Two SEALs hauled him aggressively to his feet, ignoring his groans of pain.

“You are entirely finished, Claire,” Vance spat angrily, blood trickling from his mouth.

“When my superiors find out what you did here today, you will spend the rest of your life in Leavenworth.”

I smiled a cold, victorious smile and reached into my pocket, pulling out the small, encrypted digital drive Melissa had initially tried to steal.

“Your superiors aren't going to care what I did today, Thomas,” I corrected him smoothly.

“Because while you were busy trying to shoot me, Julian Whitmore was handing the digital copies of your entire treasonous slush fund directly to the FBI.”

Vance’s face turned completely pale as he realized I had outplayed him on every single tactical level.

I had given him the fake paper copies to distract him while the real evidence secured his permanent downfall.

“Take him away, Master Chief,” I ordered, finally turning my back on the corrupt Admiral.

The SEALs dragged him out of the ballroom, leaving me standing alone amidst the shattered glass and ruined wedding decorations.

My niece, Melanie, rushed out of her hiding spot and threw her arms around my neck, crying tears of absolute relief.

My sister, Melissa, was currently sitting in a federal holding cell, and the Whitmore criminal empire was completely dismantled.

I had lost my pristine reputation, my quiet retirement, and the illusion of a normal family.

But as I walked out of the massive estate and stood proudly in the cool, rain-washed evening air, I felt a profound sense of absolute peace.

I looked down at my ruined, blood-stained white uniform, the four silver stars still gleaming brightly on my collar.

Nobody gave a damn about my Navy career.

But they would absolutely never forget it.

I walked toward Jack’s idling SUV, ready to finally begin the rest of my life, completely on my own terms.

Then, a sleek, unmarked black government sedan pulled aggressively into the driveway, blocking our exit.

A man wearing a sharp black suit stepped out of the vehicle and walked directly toward me, holding a sealed manila folder.

“Admiral Claire Bennett,” the man stated, his voice completely void of emotion.

“The President of the United States requests your immediate presence in the Oval Office.”
