Chapter 7 - The Sister

The pouring rain instantly soaked my pristine white uniform as I stared in absolute, paralyzing disbelief.
My younger sister, Melissa, the woman who had spent her entire life perfecting the role of a helpless, wealthy housewife, was standing in the doorway of an abandoned warehouse holding a military-grade assault rifle with terrifying familiarity.
“Melissa, what in God's name are you doing?” I demanded, keeping my service pistol pointed firmly at the ground.
She didn't flinch, and she didn't lower her weapon.
Her expensive mother-of-the-bride dress was soaked through, clinging to her like a second skin, but her eyes were colder than the freezing rain.
“You really never saw it, did you, Claire?” Melissa asked, her voice steady and entirely devoid of panic.
“You were always so focused on proving Dad wrong, so obsessed with your little Navy career, that you never bothered to look closely at your own family.”
Jack moved silently to my right, signaling his men to hold their fire, clearly sensing the profound complexity of the situation.
“Put the weapon down, Melissa,” I ordered, trying to summon my commanding officer persona.
“Where is Julian?”
Melissa let out a short, humorless laugh.
“Julian is tied to a chair inside this warehouse, crying like a pathetic child.”
“He is exactly the kind of weak, easily manipulated man I needed Melanie to marry so I could get close to Richard’s empire.”
The horrifying truth began to click into place, puzzle pieces I hadn't even realized were scattered on the board.
Melissa hadn't just married a wealthy banker; she had meticulously orchestrated her daughter's entire relationship to infiltrate the Whitmore logistics network.
“You are the one trying to steal the illegal weapons,” I realized out loud, my voice barely a whisper over the sound of the rain.
“I don't want the weapons, Claire,” Melissa spat, her mask of perfection completely shattering.
“I want the massive slush fund Admiral Vance has been hiding in Richard’s offshore accounts.”
“I have spent my entire life playing the perfect, quiet daughter while you got to travel the world and be a hero.”
“I want my share of the power, and those manifests are the key to unlocking the accounts.”
“You are committing federal treason for money, Melissa,” I warned her, taking a slow step forward.
“I am taking what I deserve!” she screamed, raising the rifle and pointing it directly at my chest.
Jack instantly raised his weapon, the red laser sight painting a target directly in the center of my sister's forehead.
“Do not take another step, ma'am,” Jack warned, his voice a low, lethal growl.
“If you even twitch your finger, I will end you before the bullet clears the chamber.”
Melissa laughed again, a desperate, wild sound.
“You won't shoot me, Claire,” she taunted.
“Because if you do, Julian dies, Melanie’s life is ruined, and Dad will finally have the ultimate reason to hate you forever.”
“You will be the monster who murdered her own sister on her niece's wedding day.”
She was entirely right.
If I pulled the trigger, I would completely destroy whatever fragile remnants of my family still existed.
But if I handed over the shipping manifests, I would be actively funding a domestic terrorist network and committing treason myself.
I slowly holstered my service pistol, raising my empty hands in the air.
“Stand down, Jack,” I ordered softly.
“Admiral, she is actively hostile,” Jack argued, keeping his laser sight locked on her.
“I said stand down, Master Chief,” I repeated, my tone leaving absolutely no room for debate.
Jack reluctantly lowered his weapon, though his eyes never left Melissa.
I reached into my uniform jacket and pulled out the thick stack of shipping manifests Richard had given me.
“You want the power, Melissa?” I asked, holding the papers out in the pouring rain.
“Take them.”
“But you let Julian walk out of that warehouse alive right now.”
Melissa smiled triumphantly, believing she had finally defeated the great Admiral Bennett.
She slowly lowered her rifle and took a cautious step forward to take the documents.
As she reached out her hand, a deafening explosion shattered the silence of the shipping yard.

The heavy metal doors of the warehouse behind Melissa blew violently outward, launching her forward into the mud.
A massive, armored tactical vehicle roared out of the burning warehouse, accelerating directly toward us.
