Chapter 8 - The Ambush

The sheer force of the explosion sent me crashing backward onto the wet asphalt.

The burning shrapnel rained down around us as the massive, armored tactical vehicle tore out of the ruined warehouse.

It wasn't a standard police cruiser or a SWAT truck.

It was a heavily modified, military-grade MRAP, designed specifically to withstand roadside bombs and heavy artillery fire.

“Take cover!” Jack roared, grabbing me by the collar of my uniform and dragging me violently behind a stack of rusted shipping containers.

The deafening chatter of heavy machine-gun fire erupted from the turret of the armored vehicle.

The bullets shredded the concrete where we had been standing just seconds before.

Jack’s SEALs instantly returned fire, their suppressed weapons creating a disciplined, lethal wall of lead, but their small arms bounced harmlessly off the heavy armor plating of the MRAP.

I wiped the mud and blood from my face, my tactical training immediately overriding the absolute shock of the betrayal.

Melissa was lying in the mud, completely unconscious from the blast, her pristine dress ruined.

“Who the hell is driving that thing?” Jack shouted over the deafening roar of the gunfire.

“It's not Melissa's crew,” I yelled back, analyzing the aggressive, highly coordinated assault pattern.

“That is a military clean-up squad.”

“Admiral Vance didn't wait for us to negotiate; he sent a hit squad to eliminate everyone holding the evidence!”

Vance was trying to wipe the entire board clean.

He wanted Melissa, Richard, Julian, and me entirely dead so his treasonous slush fund would remain permanently hidden in the shadows.

The heavy turret of the MRAP slowly rotated, aiming its massive barrel directly at the shipping containers hiding our position.

“We can't pierce that armor with standard rounds, Admiral!” Jack warned, quickly reloading his rifle.

“We need to disable the vehicle's engine block or we are completely pinned!”

I looked frantically around the chaotic shipping yard, desperately searching for a tactical advantage.

My eyes landed on a massive, heavy-duty industrial forklift parked near a stack of wooden pallets.

“Jack, cover me!” I commanded, completely abandoning the safety of the containers.

I sprinted across the open, rain-slicked asphalt, ignoring the bullets violently striking the ground at my heels.

I reached the forklift, threw myself into the driver's seat, and frantically hot-wired the ignition using the combat training I hadn't needed in decades.

The heavy diesel engine roared to life with a satisfying, aggressive rumble.

I slammed the vehicle into gear and drove the massive steel forks directly toward the front grill of the armored MRAP.

The driver of the tactical vehicle saw me charging and quickly attempted to pivot the heavy machine to avoid the impact.

But the MRAP was too heavy and too slow on the wet pavement.

I slammed the heavy steel forks directly under the front axle of the armored vehicle and pulled aggressively on the hydraulic lift lever.

The massive hydraulic system groaned loudly, lifting the front end of the terrifying vehicle entirely off the ground.

The wheels spun violently in the air, completely rendering the MRAP immobile.

“Move in!” Jack screamed to his men, seizing the tactical advantage.

The SEALs swarmed the disabled vehicle, rapidly blowing the heavy door hinges with specialized breaching charges.

They dragged three unconscious military contractors out of the smoking cabin, securing them with heavy zip ties in the mud.

I cut the engine on the forklift and leaped down onto the wet pavement, my white uniform now stained with black grease and crimson blood.

I immediately ran toward the ruined warehouse doors, desperately hoping Julian had survived the massive explosion.

I found him tied to a metal chair near the back of the burning room, terrified but entirely unharmed.

I quickly cut his zip ties and dragged him out into the freezing rain just as the roof of the warehouse began to collapse.

Julian collapsed onto the wet pavement, coughing violently and clutching his chest.

“Are you alright, son?” I asked, kneeling beside the terrified groom.

Julian nodded slowly, looking up at me with wide, completely traumatized eyes.

“Thank you,” he whispered, his voice cracking entirely.

“I didn't know anything about my father's business, I swear to God.”

I believed him, realizing he was just another innocent pawn caught in the crossfire of arrogant, powerful people.

Jack walked over to me, looking down at Melissa, who was finally groaning and stirring in the mud.

“What do we do with her, Admiral?” Jack asked quietly, knowing the devastating emotional weight of the decision.

Before I could answer, my secure phone vibrated violently against my hip.

I pulled it out, expecting another threat from Admiral Vance.

Instead, the screen displayed a live, high-definition video feed from inside the ballroom back at the Whitmore estate.

The video didn't show my father or my niece.

It showed Admiral Vance standing perfectly calmly in the center of the room, holding a suppressed pistol directly against the back of my father’s head.
