Chapter 4 - The Stand

The command echoed through the grand foyer like a thunderclap.

It wasn't Jack who yelled the traditional military greeting.

It was one of Richard Whitmore’s own private security contractors, a massive man standing directly to Richard’s right.

The contractor instantly snapped to perfect, rigid attention and threw a crisp, flawless salute in my direction.

Richard stared at his own hired gun in absolute, uncomprehending shock.

“What the hell are you doing, Marcus?” Richard barked, his face turning completely red.

Marcus didn't flinch, keeping his eyes locked firmly straight ahead.

“I served under Admiral Bennett in Fallujah, sir,” Marcus replied, his voice completely devoid of emotion.

“And I do not raise my hand against the commanding officer who saved my entire unit.”

A second security contractor, standing near the ballroom doors, also snapped to attention and saluted.

“I served under her in the Gulf, Mr. Whitmore,” the second man announced proudly.

Within ten seconds, half of Richard’s elite, highly paid security team had completely abandoned their posts to stand at attention for me.

The two hundred Navy SEALs standing behind me remained completely silent, but the absolute shift in power was palpable.

My father stood frozen in the center of the foyer, his mouth slightly open, finally realizing the immense, terrifying scale of the respect I commanded in the real world.

He had spent thirty-six years telling me I was a foolish little girl playing dress-up, and now he was watching grown, lethal men openly defy their billionaire boss just to salute me.

Richard Whitmore realized he was completely outmatched physically, so he immediately pivoted back to his arrogant corporate persona.

“This is a private, civilian event, Admiral,” Richard hissed, stepping closer to me.

“Your military authority means absolutely nothing inside my house.”

“If you do not leave quietly, I will call the governor and have you formally disciplined for harassing a private citizen.”

I didn't break eye contact with him for a single second.

“You aren't a private citizen, Richard,” I stated calmly, my voice carrying clearly across the silent foyer.

“You are the primary logistics coordinator for a sanctioned Eastern European defense contractor.”

“And you are currently using your shipping lines to illegally transport stolen military hardware out of the port of Charleston.”

The blood completely drained from Richard’s face.

Melissa gasped loudly, covering her mouth with her manicured hand.

My father looked at Richard, waiting for the billionaire to furiously deny the outrageous accusation.

But Richard didn't deny it.

Instead, he reached slowly into his tailored tuxedo jacket.

Jack Hayes moved faster than my eyes could track, stepping between me and Richard with lightning speed.

But Richard didn't pull out a weapon.

He pulled out a small, encrypted satellite phone and held it up for me to see.

“You are very well informed, Admiral,” Richard whispered, his voice shaking slightly.

“But you are completely out of your jurisdiction, and you have absolutely no proof.”

“I don't need proof to hold you here, Richard,” I replied, unbuttoning my white uniform jacket to reveal the concealed service pistol resting in my shoulder holster.

“I am detaining you under the authority of the Patriot Act until federal agents arrive to execute a search warrant on this property.”

Richard smiled, a cold, terrifying expression that completely unsettled my tactical instincts.

“Federal agents aren't coming to this house today, Claire,” Richard said smoothly.

“Because the man who authorized the illegal weapons shipments isn't Eastern European.”

He pressed a single button on the satellite phone and tossed it onto the marble floor at my feet.

The phone immediately connected to a secure video feed, projecting a high-definition image onto the white wall of the foyer.

I stared at the projection, my heart completely stopping in my chest.

The video didn't show a foreign terrorist or a corrupt politician.

It showed the Pentagon briefing room.

And sitting at the head of the heavy wooden table, wearing the uniform of a five-star Fleet Admiral, was my direct commanding officer.

Admiral Thomas Vance.

“Hello, Claire,” Admiral Vance said through the phone's speaker, his voice perfectly calm.

“I strongly suggest you turn your men around and walk out of that house immediately.”
