Chapter 3 - The Battalion

I looked in my rearview mirror and realized the massive black SUV wasn't alone.

Three massive luxury motorcoaches were idling quietly down the long country road leading to the estate.

Through the tinted windows, I could see rows of broad-shouldered men sitting in complete silence.

They weren't wearing military uniforms, but their posture, their short haircuts, and their intense focus were unmistakable.

“Jack, what exactly did you do?” I asked quietly.

“I simply called a few friends, Claire,” Jack replied, not taking his eyes off the terrified security guard.

“You spent your career ensuring we all made it home from hell.”

“We figured it was time we returned the favor.”

The security guard looked at the buses, then looked back at my four silver stars, clearly calculating his odds of survival.

He quickly keyed his radio and the heavy wrought-iron gates slowly swung open.

Jack gave the man a sharp nod and climbed back into his SUV, signaling the massive convoy to follow my car up the driveway.

We parked in a designated VIP lot hidden behind a massive row of ancient hedges.

I stepped out of my vehicle, the crisp white fabric of my uniform standing out starkly against the dark, stormy afternoon sky.

The doors of the motorcoaches hissed open, and over two hundred combat-tested Navy SEALs poured out onto the gravel.

They moved with terrifying, silent precision, forming up behind me without a single verbal command being issued.

Jack walked up to my side, looking incredibly proud.

“Ready to attend a wedding, Admiral?” he asked.

“Let's go greet the family,” I replied, leading the massive column toward the grand entrance of the mansion.

The heavy oak doors were propped wide open, revealing a breathtaking foyer filled with expensive floral arrangements and soft string music.

Hundreds of wealthy, impeccably dressed guests were already seated in the massive ballroom waiting for the ceremony to begin.

As I stepped through the front doors, my sister, Melissa, practically sprinted across the marble floor to intercept me.

She was wearing an incredibly expensive mother-of-the-bride dress, and her face was flushed with absolute panic.

“Claire!” she hissed, grabbing my arm and trying to pull me toward a side hallway.

“What are you doing here in that ridiculous outfit?”

“I explicitly told Mom to tell you not to wear the uniform!”

I gently but firmly removed her manicured hand from my sleeve.

“I am wearing the uniform of a four-star Admiral, Melissa,” I stated calmly.

“It is not an outfit, and I will not hide it to appease your new in-laws.”

Melissa looked over my shoulder and finally noticed the two hundred massive men standing silently in the foyer.

Her jaw completely dropped.

“Who are these people?” she demanded hysterically.

“They are my plus-ones,” I replied smoothly.

Before Melissa could throw a full-blown tantrum, my father appeared from the ballroom, looking absolutely furious.

He marched over to us, his face turning a dark, dangerous shade of purple.

“I sent you a text message, Claire,” my father growled, completely ignoring my rank.

“I told you nobody gives a damn about your Navy career, and you show up here trying to ruin your niece’s perfect day!”

“Turn around and leave right now, before Julian’s father calls the police.”

I stood perfectly still, looking at the bitter old man who had spent his entire life trying to make me feel small.

“The police are not going to help you today, Dad,” I said quietly.

Jack stepped forward, entirely blocking my father's path to me.

“Sir, I suggest you step back,” Jack warned, his voice low and dangerous.

My father sneered at Jack, completely oblivious to the lethal capability of the man standing in front of him.

“You don't belong here, either of you,” my father spat.

Suddenly, the soft string music in the ballroom abruptly stopped.

The heavy, imposing figure of Julian’s father, Richard Whitmore, stepped out of the ballroom and into the foyer.

He was flanked by four heavily armed private security contractors.

“What is the meaning of this disruption?” Richard demanded, his voice echoing off the marble walls.

Richard’s cold eyes locked onto my uniform, and a flash of genuine panic crossed his arrogant face.

He recognized the stars, and he realized immediately that his security perimeter had been completely breached.

“Admiral Bennett,” Richard said smoothly, recovering his composure instantly.

“You are not welcome in my home.”

I took a slow, deliberate step forward, entirely closing the distance between us.

“I am not here for the champagne, Richard,” I whispered, dropping the pleasantries completely.

“I am here to find out why you sent someone into my secure home last night to leave a threat in my uniform pocket.”

Richard’s eyes widened, and he glanced nervously at the two hundred SEALs standing behind me.

“I have no idea what you are talking about,” he lied effortlessly.

“But if you do not leave immediately, my men will forcefully remove you.”

Before his security contractors could even raise their hands, a booming, authoritative voice sliced through the entire mansion.

“Admiral on Deck!”
