Chapter 8 - The Syndicate's Shadow

The discovery of the enforcer's body turned a simple kidnapping case into a federal homicide investigation.
The lumber yard was immediately locked down and surrounded by crime scene tape.
Cody stared at the trunk in absolute horror, screaming that he had no idea the body was in there.
He claimed Richard had given him the keys to the car just an hour before he went to the precinct.
Daniel realized his father was far more ruthless than anyone had ever anticipated.
Richard had murdered the enforcer to wipe out his debt, stuffed the body in the trunk, and sent Cody to take the fall.
He had manipulated his own grandson into becoming an unwitting accomplice to a mob execution.
An FBI agent gently escorted Emma to a warm ambulance to check her scraped knees.
Daniel stood by the SUV, watching the forensics team photograph the gruesome scene.
His phone vibrated with a text message from a blocked number.
The message read, "Your father tried to play us, but debts are inherited by the bloodline."
Daniel felt a chill run down his spine as he looked out past the police barricades.
Parked on the hill overlooking the lumber yard was a sleek black sedan with heavily tinted windows.
The car sat idle for a long moment before slowly driving away.
Daniel knew the syndicate was not going to let this go just because Richard was in custody.
They were going to come after Rachel, Emma, and himself to settle the score.
He walked over to the lead federal agent and demanded full witness protection for his family.
The agent agreed, stating they had enough evidence to take down the entire criminal organization if Daniel testified against his own father.
Daniel did not hesitate for a single second.
He told the agent he would burn his father’s entire legacy to the ground to keep his daughter safe.

But as Daniel turned to check on Emma, he noticed something terrifying.
The paramedic treating her in the back of the ambulance had a distinct gang tattoo on his neck.
