Chapter 10 - The House of Cards

The news of Richard’s impossible escape shook Daniel, but it did not break him.
He immediately coordinated with the US Marshals, realizing his father had likely used his last hidden offshore account to bribe a guard.
However, Richard made a fatal miscalculation in his desperation to flee.
He tried to cross the Canadian border using a forged passport that Daniel had intentionally flagged in the federal database weeks ago.
Border patrol agents swarmed Richard's vehicle within seconds of the scan.
He was dragged out of the car, kicking and screaming, and transported to an underground supermax facility where money could buy nothing.
The final loose end was permanently tied.
Two years later, life for the Mercer family was unrecognizable in the best way possible.
Daniel, Rachel, and Emma had relocated to a beautiful, sunlit home on the coast of California.
Emma was thriving in her senior year of high school, her college applications already filled with acceptance letters.
Rachel had opened a small bakery, finding peace in the simple, quiet routines of everyday life.
Daniel retired from the corporate world, spending his weekends teaching Emma how to surf and rebuild vintage cars.
They had built a new legacy based on honesty, love, and unwavering protection.
The nightmare of that freezing midnight in Ohio felt like a distant, faded memory.
One sunny afternoon, Emma walked down the driveway to check the mail.
She flipped through a stack of college brochures and local advertisements.
At the bottom of the pile was an old, yellowed envelope with no return address.
Emma opened it, pulling out a faded photograph of herself as a newborn baby.
Standing next to her crib in the photo was not her father, Daniel, but the ruthless syndicate boss who was supposedly locked away forever.

On the back of the photograph, written in fresh red ink, were four words.
"See you soon, daughter."
