Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

A blinding flash of red light and sparks erupted from the tiny device.
Cody screamed in agony, dropping the handgun as the burning magnesium grazed his cheek.
He stumbled backward, clutching his face as thick red smoke filled the morning air.
Emma scrambled to her feet, kicked the dropped gun into a deep puddle of muddy water, and ran.
She darted between stacks of rotting lumber, using the maze of wood to hide her movements.
Cody recovered blindly, screaming her name with a terrifying, animalistic rage.
He blindly chased after her, picking up a heavy iron pipe from the debris.
Emma found a rusted shipping container with the door slightly ajar and slipped inside, holding her breath.
She heard Cody's heavy boots crunching on the gravel just inches from her hiding spot.
Suddenly, the roar of a massive engine echoed through the lumber yard.
Daniel’s SUV smashed through the chained front gates, sending sparks flying across the concrete.
He slammed on the brakes, leapt from the vehicle, and tackled Cody to the ground before the boy could react.
Daniel pinned his nephew to the gravel, striking him twice across the jaw until Cody stopped resisting.
Emma ran out of the shipping container, throwing her arms around her father's neck.
Sirens wailed in the distance as dozens of police cruisers swarmed the industrial park.
Officers dragged Cody up from the dirt, slapping heavy steel handcuffs on his wrists.
An FBI agent approached Daniel, confirming that Richard and Denise had just been arrested at the airport trying to flee the country.
The nightmare appeared to be entirely over.
Daniel held his daughter tightly, promising her that they were finally safe.
As they walked back to the SUV, an officer popped the trunk of Cody's stolen car to conduct a standard inventory search.
The officer gasped and immediately drew his weapon, pointing it into the trunk.

Curious, Daniel stepped closer to see what Cody had been hiding.
Inside the trunk was the lifeless body of the syndicate’s lead enforcer.
