Chapter 1 - The Midnight Ultimatum

Daniel Mercer gripped his phone so tightly the screen glass groaned.
He sat in the sterile waiting room of the Chicago hospital, listening to the heavy silence on the family group chat.
Thirty minutes had passed since he sent his final warning.
The timestamp on his phone read 2:40 AM.
A notification chimed, illuminating his face in the dark room.
It was a reply from his father, Richard.
The message read, "Stop being dramatic, she can sleep in the hotel, and I am not driving out in the cold to bring her some cheap clothes."
Daniel did not reply.
He opened a secure banking application on his phone instead.
For five years, Daniel had quietly paid the mortgage on Richard's sprawling suburban house to keep his father out of bankruptcy.
He had also funded the joint credit cards that his sister, Denise, used to maintain her lavish lifestyle.
Daniel tapped the screen three times, freezing every single account associated with the Mercer family trust.
He then forwarded the digital deed of the Ohio house to his corporate lawyer with a one-word email.
The word was "Foreclose."
In her hotel room miles away, Emma sat on the edge of the bed wrapped in a thick blanket.
She was exhausted, but her adrenaline refused to let her sleep.
She reached into the trash bag Cody had stuffed her belongings into, looking for a dry pair of socks.
Her hand brushed against something hard and metallic wrapped inside one of her old sweaters.
She pulled it out and realized it was a small, locked titanium lockbox.
It did not belong to her.
She recognized it as the box her late grandmother used to keep hidden under the floorboards of the attic.
Emma grabbed a heavy brass lamp from the bedside table and smashed it against the rusted lock.
The lock shattered on the third strike.
Inside the box was a stack of legal documents and a handwritten letter addressed to Daniel.

Emma unfolded the letter and gasped as she read the first line.
The letter stated that Cody was not Denise’s biological son, and Richard had paid someone a fortune to hide the truth.
