Chapter 9 - The Mother's Wrath

Daniel's cruel smile widened as he watched me slowly and completely surrender my only weapon.

He demanded that Marshal Thomas forcefully kick his rifle across the damp concrete floor, which the agent reluctantly did.

Daniel held up the small vial of antidote, teasingly swirling the clear liquid in the harsh glare of the spotlight.

He coldly informed me that he was going to smash the vial anyway, just to thoroughly enjoy the look of pure despair on my face.

Clara let out a weak, rattling gasp from her chair, her eyelids fluttering dangerously as the neurotoxin severely ravaged her system.

I realized in that agonizing fraction of a second that a mother's fierce instinct completely supersedes any logical legal training.

I did not beg for my daughter's life or attempt to rationally negotiate with a complete and utter psychopath.

Instead, I swiftly pulled a hidden, razor-sharp tactical knife from my boot and hurled it with absolutely everything I had.

The heavy blade spun perfectly through the air and buried itself deeply into Daniel's right shoulder.

He screamed in sheer, unexpected agony, his grip completely faltering as he instinctively dropped the heavy pistol.

Thomas instantly dove forward in a blur of motion, aggressively snatching Sophie away from the dangerous line of fire.

I sprinted across the room and violently tackled Daniel to the hard ground before he could completely recover his footing.

We fought viciously on the cold floor, my desperate rage matching his highly trained, ruthless physical strength.

He managed to strike me hard across the jaw, momentarily stunning me as he desperately scrambled toward the dropped antidote vial.

I grabbed a heavy piece of broken concrete from the floor and smashed it fiercely against his reaching hand.

He howled in pain as his fingers shattered, completely allowing me to snatch the precious glass vial away from his grasp.

I ignored his bleeding, writhing body and rushed frantically to my dying daughter's side.

I quickly injected the clear liquid directly into Clara's neck, praying desperately to a God I hadn't spoken to in years.

For a terrifying, endless moment, she remained completely motionless and dreadfully silent in the chair.

Then, she took a massive, deep breath of air, her chest heaving wildly as the antidote miraculously restarted her failing lungs.

I held her tightly against my chest, sobbing uncontrollably as the immense weight of the nightmare finally began to lift.

Daniel slowly pushed himself up from the floor, his face twisted into an ugly mask of pure, unadulterated hatred.

He aggressively pulled a hidden detonator from his pocket, screaming that he had rigged the entire factory with highly explosive C4.

He violently pressed his thumb down on the red trigger button, laughing maniacally as he waited for the massive explosion.

A deafening silence filled the damp basement, completely broken only by the sound of heavy boots echoing down the hallway.

A massive team of heavily armed FBI agents, led by the loyal agents who had deciphered my Morse code, swarmed the entire room.

The lead agent calmly informed Daniel that they had successfully disabled the explosive charges exactly ten minutes ago.

Daniel collapsed onto his knees, finally realizing that his massive criminal empire had completely and utterly fallen apart.

I stood up slowly, wiping the dirt and blood from my face, and looked down at the pathetic man who had terrorized my family.

I coldly told him that he was about to experience the absolute full, merciless weight of the federal justice system.
