Chapter 7 - The Poisoned Pawn

Daniel's cruel laughter reverberated through the massive penthouse, chilling me to the very marrow of my bones.

He proudly explained that the entire server farm confrontation had been a highly sophisticated piece of theatrical misdirection.

The cartel needed a credible scapegoat for the missing billions, and a rogue federal judge fit their narrative absolutely perfectly.

He had easily tracked Clara and Sophie to the supposedly secure federal bunker because a marshal on Thomas's team was a traitor.

I stared in absolute horror at the live video feed, watching my innocent granddaughter cry hysterically in the dark basement.

Daniel coldly stated that Clara had just been injected with a slow-acting, completely undetectable neurotoxin.

He proudly boasted that the poison would painfully shut down her respiratory system in exactly forty-five minutes.

He offered to provide the only existing antidote if I publicly confessed to the courthouse bombings and the massive cartel theft.

I gripped the edge of the glass coffee table, struggling to suppress a rising tide of absolute panic.

Thomas furiously tried to trace the video signal using his tactical tablet, but the IP address was routing through dozens of proxy servers.

I knew that negotiating with a psychopath like Daniel would only result in all of our eventual deaths.

I looked directly into the hidden security camera mounted in the corner of the ceiling and told him I accepted his terms.

Daniel smiled widely on the screen, thoroughly enjoying his total psychological domination over a federal judge.

He ordered me to step out onto the penthouse balcony, where a news drone was already hovering perfectly in the night sky.

I slowly walked out into the freezing wind, staring directly into the glowing red lens of the hovering camera.

I began to loudly recite the fabricated confession he had meticulously prepared for me, taking the blame for every single crime.

As I spoke, I subtly tapped my fingers against the balcony railing in highly specific, rhythmic patterns.

It was a classic Morse code distress signal, a desperate tactic I had learned during my early days as a federal prosecutor.

I prayed that the loyal agents monitoring the live broadcast would recognize the hidden message buried in my televised surrender.

Daniel eagerly watched the broadcast, completely blinded by his own massive ego and insatiable thirst for total victory.

Thomas finally managed to isolate a tiny flaw in the video feed's encryption, revealing a partial GPS coordinate.

He whispered urgently that the bunker was located directly beneath an abandoned pharmaceutical factory on the edge of the city.

I finished the fake confession and demanded that Daniel release the antidote to Clara immediately.

Daniel laughed hysterically on the speakers and casually pressed a button on his remote control.

The video feed abruptly cut to static, leaving me completely agonizing over my daughter's terrifying fate.

I turned back toward the penthouse, realizing the heavy glass balcony doors had automatically locked behind me.

A metallic hiss sounded from the vents above the balcony, rapidly releasing a thick, highly noxious green gas into the air.

Daniel had never intended to let me survive the confession, leaving me completely trapped in a toxic, invisible cage.

May you like

My lungs began to burn fiercely as I frantically searched the empty balcony for any possible means of escape.

Thomas aggressively smashed a heavy marble chair against the reinforced glass from the inside, but the window didn't even crack.
