Chapter 8 - The Shattered Glass

The burning sensation in my lungs intensified rapidly as the toxic green gas completely enveloped the narrow balcony.
I dropped to my knees, desperately gasping for clean air while my vision began to blur dangerously.
Thomas continued to relentlessly bash the heavy marble chair against the reinforced glass doors with every ounce of his massive strength.
I knew the glass was designed to withstand hurricane-force winds, making manual forced entry virtually impossible.
I crawled weakly toward the edge of the balcony, desperately contemplating jumping to escape the excruciating pain of the poison.
Suddenly, Thomas pulled a compact explosive breaching charge from his tactical vest and slapped it directly onto the center of the glass.
He aggressively signaled for me to take immediate cover behind a thick concrete planter located in the far corner.
I curled my body into a tight ball just as a deafening explosion completely shattered the indestructible glass into millions of tiny pieces.
The massive shockwave violently propelled me backward, but the toxic gas was instantly sucked out into the open night air.
Thomas dragged my coughing, battered body back into the relative safety of the luxurious penthouse living room.
We had absolutely no time to recover from the blast, as Clara's terrifying countdown was rapidly approaching its fatal end.
We sprinted completely out of the ruined penthouse, completely ignoring the wailing fire alarms echoing through the skyscraper.
Thomas drove the stolen delivery van like a madman, aggressively weaving through the heavy downtown traffic toward the abandoned factory.
I injected myself with a massive dose of military-grade adrenaline from his medical kit to aggressively combat the lingering effects of the gas.
We arrived at the decaying pharmaceutical factory with exactly fourteen agonizing minutes left on Clara's terrifying clock.
The massive iron gates were heavily chained shut, so Thomas simply accelerated and violently rammed the van entirely through them.
We abandoned the smoking vehicle and sprinted into the dark, labyrinthine corridors of the decaying industrial facility.
We encountered minimal resistance, realizing that Daniel had arrogantly assumed the toxic gas had successfully eliminated us.
We finally located the heavy steel door leading to the subterranean bunker, secured by a complex biometric keypad.
Thomas bypassed the complicated lock by aggressively applying a shaped explosive charge to the primary door hinges.
The heavy metal door crashed loudly to the concrete floor, revealing the damp, incredibly dark basement from the video.
Clara was slumped heavily in her chair, her skin pale and her breathing incredibly shallow and dangerously erratic.
Sophie was crying softly beside her, completely terrified but miraculously physically unharmed by the horrific ordeal.
I frantically searched the dark room for the promised antidote, my hands shaking violently with sheer, unadulterated panic.
A harsh spotlight suddenly snapped on, completely blinding us in the center of the damp room.
Daniel stepped slowly out of the shadows, holding a small vial of clear liquid in one hand and a loaded pistol in the other.
He smiled wickedly and proudly declared that I was just in time to watch my beloved daughter take her final, agonizing breath.
I raised my weapon, but Daniel instantly pressed his gun directly against Sophie's tiny, trembling head.

He softly whispered that if I even twitched my finger, my beautiful granddaughter's brains would paint the concrete floor.
I slowly lowered my gun, completely paralyzed by the horrifying, impossible choice staring me directly in the face.
