Chapter 2 - The Federal Shield

I stared at the lead officer's hand as it rested dangerously close to his holstered weapon.

I did not back away from the doorway or show a single ounce of fear.

Instead, I reached into my pocket, pulled out a small silver badge, and held it directly up to the porch light.

I formally introduced myself as Judge Evelyn Hart of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.

The arrogant officer's smug smile vanished instantly, replaced by a look of sheer terror.

He stammered incomprehensibly, his wide eyes darting wildly from my face to the federal credentials shining in my hand.

I coldly informed him that he was currently attempting to execute a fabricated warrant on the private residence of a sitting federal judge.

I added that any hostile action taken on this porch would be treated as a direct assault on the federal judiciary.

The officers slowly backed down the wooden steps, moving their hands far away from their deadly weapons.

They scrambled desperately into their marked cruisers and sped away into the stormy night without another word.

Clara exhaled a shaky breath behind me, hot tears of relief spilling rapidly down her heavily bruised cheeks.

I locked the heavy deadbolt and told her we needed to leave the premises immediately.

Daniel now fully knew my true identity, which meant his violent tactics were about to become exponentially more dangerous.

I packed a single duffel bag and quickly loaded Clara and Sophie into my heavily armored suburban vehicle.

We drove carefully through the dark, winding roads of Virginia toward a highly secure federal safe house located in Alexandria.

My mind raced with the terrifying reality of Daniel's immense and deeply rooted power.

A standard law firm partner simply did not have the capital to instantly freeze a federal pension or hire police hit squads.

I dialed a highly trusted contact at the FBI and asked him to run a covert financial background check on Mercer, Vale and Knox.

The veteran agent promised to call me back as soon as he accessed the classified federal databases.

We arrived at the remote safe house just as the sun began to slowly rise over the misty Potomac River.

Clara finally fell exhausted onto the couch, holding Sophie incredibly tightly in her protective arms.

My cell phone buzzed violently against the marble kitchen counter.

The FBI agent's voice sounded surprisingly breathless and completely terrified when I answered.

He frantically told me Daniel's prestigious firm was actually the primary money-laundering hub for a massive international cartel.

He warned me that Daniel was not just a corrupt lawyer, but a highly lethal and high-ranking cartel lieutenant.

Before I could even process this horrifying information, the agent gasped in sudden, sharp pain.

A loud, deafening gunshot echoed cleanly through the phone line.

The call abruptly disconnected, leaving me listening to a chilling dead tone.

Then the power to the safe house completely cut out, plunging us into total and absolute darkness.

A heavy mechanical drill began violently tearing through the reinforced steel of the safe house's front door.
