Chapter 9 - The Surrender

I stared through the shattered warehouse windows at my terrified daughter.
Richard had the barrel of his pistol pressed firmly against the back of her neck.
I slowly lowered the shotgun to the concrete floor and kicked my pistol away.
I raised my hands and walked out of the warehouse, completely surrendering to the man I hated most.
Richard smiled, a sick, victorious grin stretching across his face.
"Search him," Richard ordered the remaining mercenaries.
Two men rushed forward, kicking my legs apart and violently patting me down.
They took my satellite phone, my wallet, and the keys to my truck.
"Now, where are the Beirut files?" Richard demanded, tightening his grip on Lily.
"They are buried under the floorboards of my old house," I lied smoothly.
Richard laughed and shook his head, pressing the gun harder into Lily's skin.
"We already burned your house to the ground, old man, they weren't there," he sneered.
"If you want to save her, you are going to transfer the digital decryption keys to my server right now."
He threw a heavy tactical tablet onto the gravel at my feet.
I slowly knelt down, picked up the tablet, and began typing in my master override codes.
I watched the progress bar slowly reach one hundred percent, transferring all the leverage I had left.
"There, you have everything," I said, standing back up.
"Now let her go."

Richard looked at the screen, confirming the data transfer was complete.
"You really are a fool, Marcus," Richard whispered, raising his gun to shoot me.
